I got an old friend back from the repair shop. There is a dedicated official Contax repair company in Japan - the only part left when Kyocera ceased production. They have all the original parts for their cameras.
They replaced the lens retraction mechanism, fixed the flash, replaced the control knob, and did an all-over cleaning and adjustment. Should be good to go for another 25 years.
