New research shows that feedbacks in the climate system are boosting methane emissions from natural sources, especially tropical wetlands.

Scientists say that an abrupt surge in methane emissions in the early 2000s is probably due mainly to the response of wetlands to warming, with additional contributions coming from fossil fuel use, “implying that anthropogenic emissions must decrease more than expected to reach a given warming goal.”

Increasing rainfall, a well-documented impact of global warming, is making wetlands larger and wetter, and a warmer world fosters more plant growth, which means more decomposing material that emits methane.

About 60% of methane emissions are from fossil fuel use, farming, landfills, and waste, with the rest coming from rotting vegetation in wetlands in the tropics and Northern Hemisphere.

A new trouble spot is in the Arctic, where scientists recently found unexpectedly large methane emissions in winter. And globally, the increase in water vapor caused by global warming is slowing the rate at which methane breaks down in the atmosphere.

Before the automobile industry invented the catalytic converter, the costs of reducing air pollution seemed astronomical, enough to bankrupt the entire industry. After they invented the catalytical converter, the costs were manageable. And they only invented it because they were faced with the threat of being shut down.

Industries creating harms often claim that controls and regulations are impossible, would bankrupt them, etc., trying to make their existence into a zero-sum game (for some people to have the benefit of our industry, other people must suffer). AI companies claim they must steal copyrighted works because they could not exist otherwise; or be allowed to use as much electricity as they demand in spite of the costs. But it's B.S., and we should stop accepting this rhetoric. Forced to innovate to reduce harms, these industries have innovated, and made themselves even more profitable than they were when they were dragging their feet about it like children who don't want to clean their rooms.

Trump is a disaster. No question about that. But our troubles did not begin with him.

Corporate Democrats are just as eager to sell us out and destroy everything for the sake of Business As Usual, Wall Street, and Big Oil.

Listen to the clip below from an interview Barack Obama gave last year.

He says climate change might be a problem, but we can handle it. Although there's no way now to keep global warming below 2°C, that shouldn’t be so bad. And if we work hard, we might be able to stay at around 3°C … but the important thing is, stop worrying! Don't complain about the system. Everything is under control.

This is absolutely criminal. That much extra heat will destroy modern civilization. Billions of people will die, along with millions of species of plants and animals going extinct. The world as we know it will end.

There still *could* be a way to prevent all that. But it requires system change. The end of capitalism. It requires #Degrowth.

And no one in a position of power wants to hear that.
