A grim tale of domestic violence in remote New Zealand sheep country, narrated by the couple's pet magpie(!). Very much outside my comfort zone, as I had to keep forcing myself to pick it up given the upsetting themes, but at it's best it was brilliantly executed. Some of the most inventive and excellent prose to bring the bird's worldview to life. The subplot involving animal rights activists didn't work for me. @bookstodon #bookstodon #CatherineChidgey
