I’ve not seen any #monarch #butterflies so far this spring but they’ve obviously been here. Spotted these two monarch #caterpillars yesterday on the one milkweed in my front #garden, a survivor that has regrown after dying back to the soil following our big winter freeze. Hope these make it to adulthood, the ones I saw last year disappeared before pupating.

This assortment of butterflies and flowers were photographed last month by my wife in eastern NC. There was a lot going on in that little field, wish we had spent more time there.

Two butterflies share a perch at the top of a flower. One of the butterflies has mostly yellow wings with rough black edges. One black spot is on each wing. The other butterfly is mostly brown with a complicated set of black markings. The flower they are perching on is mostly reddish but the end of each petal is bright yellow. The same type of flower is showing in the bottom of the image. The background is a tangle of green grass.

Clearing out all the past-their-prime zinnias from the front garden bed yesterday and this giant swallowtail showed up and hung around the lantana long enough for me to go grab my camera.

This morning I knew this chrysalis was about to be ready. Went for an hour for a walk, came back, and there is a new Monarch 🦋 😍. Still has to let the wings dry and unfold.
Always in wonder how this large butterfly fits into the small bag.

I was just photographing this beautiful butterfly caterpillar on the little-traveled road when someone tapped me on the shoulder and quietly said, "Look over there!"
Had we not stopped for the caterpillar, we would have been very close...
Btw, this is the caterpillar (second photo for sure) of the Mourning Cloak butterfly (Nymphalis antiopa).
