Fudge Bites by Nancy Coco with Vanessa Johansson (2019) is the seventh book in the Candy-Coated mystery series. It's Halloween on Mackinac and Allie and Mallow are dressed up for the Zombie Walk. Like during the Zombie Ride in Killer Take Out by Lucy Burdette (2016), one of the zombies is murdered. This time, though, it's neither Allie nor Mallow who find the body; Mella does!

An anthology of recent (2012-23) short space opera, a genre defined by editor #JonathanStrahan in an interesting introduction as "romantic adventure set on space and told on grand scale". This is a high quality collection by a diverse group of big names in modern SF, even if some (especially the Ann Leckie) don't seem to quite fit the genre. The standout to me was 'The Last Voyage of Skidbladnir' by Karin Tidbeck (who I don't believe I've read before) and my other favourites were by Alastair Reynolds, T. Finished Dungeon Crawler Carl.
I was really excited for this one, but it sadly didn't quite live up to the excitement I had in my head.
It was a bit tonally all over the place in the first half, and seemed to care more about being a videogame in book form than telling an emotionally impactful book.
It's a shame, because it definitely has some beats and moments where it really shines well.

Finally starting this! Book 3 that is. Book 2 had a cliffhanger, and book 2 has a joke that slightly crosses over to slight homophobia but the ending of number 2 made me keep reading. even though I am three books in, I still don’t really understand why the airs have such an issue with the twins taking over their throne, but I love the romantic tension in this. Witch Hat Atelier, Volume 5 Kamome Shirahama with Stephen Kohler (Translator) (2019) ends the arc of the second test. It also examines the consequences of transformative magic through two different scenarios.
Years of being trapped as sentient golden statues (see also Ozma of Oz (1907) and The Yellow Knight of Oz (1930) have created an entire population bent on revenge. Lessons learned by escaping the dragon in the maze are creatively applied here as a means of escape.
