Tounome, an invisible man, works as a private detective with three others. Yakou Shizuka, a blind woman, is hired to be the agency's secretary.

I'm starting to read a book written as a collaboration by two authors, and I always wonder how that works.
There are publishing contracts that involve a senior and a junior writer on the same project, where the senior writer does less of the work, but oversees the whole development, and lends their name recognition. But, this seems different than that. I suppose it's the same thing as two people directing a show or a movie together, like the Russo brothers or the Coen brothers. I hope it's an equal contribution.

I’m dipping back into #LibraryThing for cataloguing my books and keeping tabs on what I'm reading / have read / want to read etc. I've used various sites in the past - Goodreads, StoryGraph and NeoDB but have never been completely satisfied with any of them.
I have an older account from about 15 years ago on LibraryThing which I've resurrected and into which I’m importing books from StoryGraph. The tagging and collection features of LT seem to be quite useful. It'll take a while to tweak things, no doubt, but that's part of the fun, surely…?

#Wieland is an odd book (albeit a good one). Though Brown declared independence from European culture, the influence of popular #gothic tropes are obvious. It doesn’t even have the weirdest opening of that genre—in the first few pages of the English novelist Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto, from 1764, a character is pulverized by a giant helmet that mysteriously falls from the sky. Brown’s novel, however, is gothic in a manner that could only be American, and one particular to the mid-Atlantic, where eccentric sects proliferated, including Anabaptists, Moravians, the Ephrata Community, and Kelpius’s own apocalyptic, cave-dwelling “Society of the Woman in the Wilderness.”

People from across the 20th century are pulled into a bizarre city with an artificial sun as part of an experiment that can only be discussed in thought terminating cliches (the Experiment is the Experiment). If it were a novella I might have called it a masterpiece, but it goes on and on in its depiction of a grim mysogynistic irrational dystopia, and I lost my enthusiasm for reading about it. Lunar New Year Love Story by Gene Luen Yang and LeUyen Pham (Illustrator) (2024) is a YA love story centered on lion dancing with an Oakland setting and a lowkey Crazy Rich Asians vibe. Valentina Tran was named for Valentine's Day and until recently it was her favorite holiday. Now she believes she's cursed in love but a Valentine's heart given to her by a lion dancer has given her heart one last hopefully zing.

Finished this 992 page behemoth of a novel by typographer #RianHughes , in which Earth is 'invaded' by ideas from outer space. Full of style shifts from fake wikipedia pages and BBC articles, to text-based graphic storytelling, to an entire novella presented as a serialisation from a 1970s science fiction magazine, this is one for people who enjoy formal play and metafictional tomfoolery. It is definitely too long, and there are parts that don't work, like some very clunky political / academic satire, but overall I enjoyed its ambition and playfulness. @bookstodon #bookstodon
