Four stars:

Me for You by Lolly Winston (2019) is about a widower trying to keep his shit together after the unexpected and sudden death of his wife. I picked up the book new in 2019 and didn't feel like reading it during the early days of the COVID pandemic. And then the book got moved to a box of things to find new homes for. I'm not sure when or why. But I decided I should read the things in there before I find new homes. And that's how I came to finally read Me for You.

Rudy, age 54, is now a widower. He and his wife had plans to travel. She was a pharmacist. He's a music teacher and part time piano player at Nordstrom's. Now that she's gone — a heart attack in her sleep — he's finding that he might want more than just friendship with his coworker, Sasha.

The English poet Roger McGough sends readers’ eyes travelling to and fro the way a tennis ball would across a net when they read 40-Love. Indeed, the poem itself – like the “middle aged couple” he writes about – is split by such a ‘net.’

Having spent the week in Yorkshire, I couldn’t resist picking up The Poems of Sylvia Plath, a new landmark edition edited by Amanda Golden and Karen V. Kukil and published just last week. This edition draws on decades of research and almost doubles the content of the 1981 Collected Poems.

The second image here is from a visit to Plath’s grave at the church at Heptonstall, back in September 2020. I still find it hard to believe that she was only 30 when she died, and yet she produced so much incandescent work.

To say I’m excited about the impending publication of the new novel, The End of Everything, by M. John Harrison would be something of an understatement.

“Phillip Tennent makes his living at the tideline, collecting artefacts that wash up from the Channel. It's been years since the crisis changed everything, but its exact nature remains obscure. Government barely functions, the seas are full of new creatures, Europe has been mislaid. It feels like the end.

Now Phillip has fished out of the water an object he can't keep. A creature that keeps changing. An artefact he must take inland, before it destroys everything he thinks he knows.”

I love that cover design, the sickly way the “Everything” in the title collapses towards the bottom of the page, a metaphor for decay, runoff, entropy or perhaps something much worse.

This week's #NewBooks at the library: Who is excited about the next few books he will be reviewing?

- After an impressive debut, I am looking forward to reading Cal Flyn's second book, The Savage Landscape: How We Made the Wilderness, published by HarperCollins.

- Time for another deep dive into the history of my favourite discipline, #EvolutionaryBiology. I really enjoyed Costa's annotated version of Wallace's notebook, and am very excited about delving into this annotated version of #CharlesDarwin's The Descent of Man, beautifully published here by @princetonupress. Expect me to go dark for a while, it's over 760 pages!

- And for context, I will be adding a review of Jeremy DeSilva's A Most Interesting Problem: What #Darwin’s Descent of Man Got Right and Wrong about #HumanEvolution, published a few years back, also by Princeton.

The number of women rises as the decades go by; half of the contemporary writers are female. This might not announce the decline of the great white male, but it does signal a much-needed reset."

Just finished reading BRAWLER, by Lauren Groff. These stories pack a punch, tell us a lot about ourselves, and make us so involved that we start telling the characters what to do and what not to. The author who impressed you with the story collection of FLORIDA, is back, and more skilled than ever before. #books @bookstodon #bookstodon

Cover depicts a fiercely focused swimmer on the dive team. She is mirrored in the water by her own reflection, but her gaze is, perhaps unsettlingly, directed at you, like she has something to tell you that you aren't prepared to hear. That level of trepidation informs the entire collection.

Jean-Paul Sartre (June 21, 1905 - April 15, 1980) as a child, lost the use of one eye, but later became one of the sharpest observers of human nature.

#Sartre believed that people are not born with a fixed “essence”: we become ourselves through choices.

By the end of his life he was almost blind, but he kept working. Around 50,000 people reportedly came to his funeral procession in Paris.
