Nietzsche vs. Schopenhauer’s Views on Life, Suffering, and the Will

Is suffering something that hinders us, or helps us along? Schopenhauer looks for a way out, while Nietzsche insists we make good use of it.

Portrait photograph of Arthur Schopenhauer.

By Johann Schäfer - Frankfurt am Main University Library

Schopenhauer is seated in a three-quarter view, his head slightly turned, allowing the contours of his prominent facial features—deep-set eyes, high forehead, and sharply defined cheekbones. His expression is serious.

His trademark wild white hair, swept up and away from his temples, frames his aged face.

Friedrich Nietzsche, circa 1875.

Nietzsche is pictured in formal attire, wearing a dark suit with a vest and a stiff white collar. His thick mustache, which would become one of his most recognizable features, is already fully grown and prominent in this image. His hair is neatly combed, parted to the side, and his gaze is direct, if slightly distant.

From the British Museum: Title-page to Hobbes's 'Leviathan' (London: Andrew Cooke, 1651): an allegory of governance and the nature of civil and ecclesiastical authority. A crowned man whose body is made of numerous human bodies, emerges from a mountain at the foot of which is a city, holding a sword in his right hand and a crozier in in left hand; below is the title inscribed on a tapestry and surrounded by ten framed allegories: castle, crown, cannon, military trophies, battle on the left, church, bishop mitre, thunder, inscribed trident and forks, and assembly of magistrates;. 1651

"Cold in the earth—and the deep snow piled above thee,
Far, far, removed, cold in the dreary grave!
Have I forgot, my only Love, to love thee,
Severed at last by Time's all-severing wave?"

How Wuthering Heights was shaped by Emily Brontë’s gothic poetry

Emily Brontë’s poetry is full of haunting love, grief and death.

Title page of the book Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell

Authors: Charlotte Brontë
Anne Brontë
Emily Brontë

A title page from an 1846 publication on aged cream paper. At the very top, a handwritten pencil inscription reads "Brontë Charlotte" in a casual, slightly slanted hand. The printed text is centered and typeset in a spare, classical style with generous spacing between elements.
Below a small decorative wavy rule, the publication details appear at the bottom:
LONDON:
SMITH, ELDER AND CO., 65, CORNHILL.
1846.

The layout is minimal and elegant, with wide margins and abundant white space giving it a restrained, dignified character typical of mid-Victorian book design.

Samuel Pepys in the painting by John Hayls from 1666.

In the portrait, Samuel Pepys is shown in three-quarter length. He is seated at an angle, turning slightly toward the viewer, with a direct and thoughtful gaze.

Pepys wears a silk or satin robe, which falls in rich folds. Beneath it, a white shirt or cravat adds contrast and a touch of elegance. His dark, shoulder-length hair — whether natural or a wig — frames his face and gives the portrait a fashionable air typical of the Restoration era.

I recently read "Lunar New Year Love Story" by Gene Luen Yang and LeUyen Pham. I'd picked it up as a good February read and then was quite surprised by all its twists and turns. What surprised me most, though, was how #Catholicism was depicted. I don't think I've ever seen such a realistic, well-rounded portrayal in fiction. I know people like all of these. I feel like the creators knew their material intimately. Very impressed.
