I pre-ordered a couple books, and the seller said to pick out a free book as well, so I chose the most topical and maybe too resonant: The Uninhabitable Earth: Life After Warming, by David Wallace-Wells. Yes, nothing like some apocalyptic future nonfiction as light reading 😂

Set in a fictional country in the present day, this is a story told through the eyes of an ex-military dog, Etna. After surviving years of a devastating war, Etna decides one night to leave the men he has fought alongside for years and return home—to the place where he was taken from when he was young, in the thin but persistent hope that if a home exists for him, it might be there.

Thus begins an exhilarating odyssey told through the eyes of a dog as he traverses across ruined landscapes and fights to survive in a world that, even in peacetime, proves to be just as precarious. Along the way, he encounters other animals and humans who are attempting to figure out how to start again. What makes a life when there is no home to go back to? How do we begin to trust each other again after such profound loss?

This is a novel about the power of an idea, about never giving up, and ultimately a novel about finding hope in the most dire of times.

The best-reviewed book of the summer by The New York Times, Time, NPR, and more, Etna is a “devastating and gorgeous” (The New York Times Book Review), “hypnotic” (Time) literary novel that follows an ex-military dog who leaves the soldiers he once served and sets out on an odyssey across a war-torn country in search of home, hope, and a life beyond conflict—this is a novel about the power of an idea, about never giving up, and ultimately an “epic journey of hope” (Booklist, starred review) that finds light in the mo

"Damaya at the fulcrum of it all": A crack in an otherwise flawless story?

In Chapter 11 of The Fifth Season, "Damaya at the fulcrum of it all," we read about the bullying Damaya suffered during her early years at the Fulcrum, and the terrible fallout after she takes action to put a stop to it.

When Damaya realizes how dangerous bullying at the Fulcrum can be, she approaches Crack, another Fulcrum grit who is also being bullied, and enlists the other girl's aid to execute a plan to catch the conspirators who have been tormenting them. Crack agrees to help Damaya, and the two go through with their plan. However, things take an unexpected turn when a cascade of finger pointing reveals that it was Crack who was the mastermind behind the effort to break Damaya, leaving us to wonder:

Why did Crack help Damaya?

Me and my partner are not the only readers to wonder. This thread on Goodreads reveals some readers' frustrations with this part of the story. I found Reddit threads that also discuss this part of the story. At first pass, it doesn't seem to make much sense that Crack would agree to help Damaya when she's the one who was behind the bullying. It seems to make even less sense that Crack wouldn't fuck Damaya over—by hiding Damaya's shoes somewhere other than Maxixe's chest—after they've set the plan in motion. So why does she agree to help, and why does she do everything according to Damaya's plan? After a long discussion with my partner, this is how I've come to think of it:

First, we have to understan Crack's position.

We gather that she's been the target of bullying for some time before Damaya's troubles begin, and perhaps her bullying has been worse. Certainly, she's in danger because of it; remember that the stakes at the Fulcrum are life and death.

So Crack is angry and afraid and desperate when she goes after Damaya. Hers isn't the typical "popular kid hazing the unpopular kid" bullying—it's a matter of survival. She needs the other grits to expend their cruelty on Damaya; otherwise, she is the target of that cruelty, and she's at the end of her rope.

Note, here, that Maxixe—the target of the girls' plan—is one of the popular kids, and it's very likely that he's been participating in or even instigating the bullying of Crack. Note, also, that it's implied that Damaya has not been bullying Crack.

It's in this context that Damaya seeks an ally in Crack, and their first interaction is loaded with more complexity than Damaya can know:

Crack eyes her. “Really? Things are bad enough that you need me?”
It’s a good sign that they can be honest with each other right off. “Yes,” Damaya says, and sits since Crack hasn’t really objected. “They’re messing with you, too, aren’t they?” Of course they are. Damaya hasn’t seen whatever they’re doing, but it only makes sense. There’s an order to life in the Fulcrum.

Crack chose Damaya as a target because Damaya is the goody two-shoes grit who makes all the other grits look bad by comparison. Whatever Crack is expecting from Damaya, it's not empathy.

Crack sighs. This makes the room reverberate faintly, or so it feels for an instant. Damaya makes herself not react, because a good partnership should not begin with a display of fear. Crack sees this and relaxes, just a little. The judder of imminent disaster fades.

Damaya's empathy knocks the wind out of Crack. Then, when she doesn't react to Crack's literally palpable emotions with fear, Damaya gives Crack some of the humanity the other grits, in their fear of her, have denied her.

“Yeah,” Crack says, softly. Damaya realizes all of a sudden that Crack is angry, though she keeps her gaze on her plate. It’s there in the way she holds her fork too tightly, and the way her expression is too blank. All at once Damaya wonders: Is Crack’s control really a problem? Or is it simply that her tormentors have done their best to make her crack? “So what do you want to do about it?”
Damaya outlines her plan. After an initial flinch, Crack realizes she is serious. They finish eating in silence, while Crack thinks it over. At last, Crack says, “I’m in.”

I understand that initial flinch to be Crack reacting to Damaya's plan to use the very same ploy Crack used to land Damaya in trouble as a means of catching out the ringleader of the bullies. Crack weighs her options as she eats in silence:

She could confess to Damaya and apologize, but the risk that Damaya won't forgive her and will instead turn her in to the instructors is too high. Despite the goodwill Damaya has earned, Crack can't trust her that far.
She could refuse to help Damaya, but then there's a chance that Damaya might target Jasper. Jasper, who knows that the person Damaya is looking for is Crack.
She could agree to help, then betray Damaya instead. Damaya would get in trouble, but probably not the terminal sort. She'd still be around, she'd know that Crack was responsible for some of the bullying, and Crack would have earned a new and devastatingly clever enemy.
She could help Damaya get someone else in trouble, someone who can't implicate Crack in the original theft of Damaya's shoes, throwing Damaya off her scent and earning Damaya a new enemy—an enemy who might be so focused on Damaya that he wouldn't have any energy to spare on tormenting Crack. Two birds, one stone.

All things considered, that last option really does make the most sense. It could even have resulted in a lasting alliance with Damaya, even as Crack could have secretly continued to plot against the other girl.

But Crack didn't know that Maxixe saw Jasper steal Damaya's shoes. Didn't know that the popular boy would tell on Jasper. Didn't know that helping Damaya pin a trumped up crime on Maxixe would seal her fate.

Only Jemisin knows for sure why Crack agreed to help Damaya. (Maybe. I know that storytelling doesn't always work that way.) However, I haven't found anything written online that suggests she's talked about it in an interview somewhere. This is how I make sense of it. I'm comfortable with the assumptions I've made, and I'm satisfied with the conclusion I arrived at based on those assumptions. If this part of the book nagged at you, as it did me and my partner and other readers who went on to discuss it on Goodreads and Reddit, then I hope my short essay has helped you make peace with it—or at least given you more to think about.

$The cover of Rowley's Ride, by Owen Tyme. The central image is a ghostly electric guitar composed mostly of blue and white light, with a metal plate covering a fair bit of the main body. The guitar has a bright and shiny aura, almost like electricity, though the non-metallic portions are transparent. The background is a fractal arrangement of stained-glass panels., in various shades of red.$

I’ve reviewed indie books on my blog for quite a few years.

It’s disheartening to see how many self-published books are using LLM-generated covers these days.

A few have slipped past my screening procedure, but I really try to avoid books that do this as i get better at noticing the tells for such covers.

I’ve actually started switching to reviewing more traditionally published books because of this.

Until I wrote up this #review of Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, I hadn't realised how little fantasy I've read in recent years. I have mixed feelings about this book. It's ambitious and does atmosphere really well. But it's also overlong which creates pacing issues, and I have high standards for any work playing with time, which this novel didn't meet. This is only a recommend for readers with specific preferences.

"Palestinian Resistance Literature Under Occupation: 1948 – 1968
Assassinated in Lebanon by Israel in 1972, Palestinian intellectual Ghassan Kanafani is mostly renowned for his anti-colonial resistance, political writings and works of literary fiction. Palestinian Resistance Literature Under Occupation: 1948 – 1968 (Verso Books, 2026) brings another aspect of Kanafani’s work to an English-speaking public; a deep historical critique of Palestinian literature in the first two decades since Israel established its colonial presence on Palestinian land.

1/2

https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20260801-palestinian-resistance-literature-under-occupation-1948-1968/

Drawing upon several Palestinian writers, their poetry, short stories and plays, Kanafani provides an analysis of cultural resistance in Palestinian literature, and shows that it is just as vital as armed struggle against colonial rule. In the foreword, Rashid Khalidi notes that despite Kanafani’s distance from occupied Palestinian lands in 1948 as he was living in Beirut, the insights into the repression faced by Palestinians in Israel provide “one of the earliest portraits available of that part of Palestinian society, cut off as it was from the est of the Palestinian people.” Far from traitors, their experience and resistance from within Israel connected them to the rest of Palestinians displaced or still living in territories Israel had not yet colonised and occupied.

“Armed resistance is not merely skin-deep; it is the fruit of a tree with roots firmly planted in the ground … This type of resistance assumes its most original form in political and cultural action,” Kanafani writes in his introduction to the book. Noting that Palestinians already had a trajectory of armed and cultural resistance since the 1930s, Kanafani adds, “However, what distinguishes the resistance literature produced from 1948 to 1968 is the exceptionally cruel and violent circumstances that its authors experienced and challenged.”

Palestinians in Israel were considered a dangerous minority, hence the oppression on all aspects of Palestinian life enforced by Israel to annihilate social and cultural ties. Israeli intellectuals and officials promoted not only colonialism but also plans to alienate Palestinians from their cultural bonds. Other forms of oppression were related to inadequate education for Palestinians in Israel – Kanafani notes that in 1967, the number of Palestinian students in Israeli universities was 200, while 19,000 were Israelis. Education was further disrupted for Palestinians within the Israeli education system, with staff chosen for their aptitude in serving surveillance purposes. In 1967, Kanafani notes, hundreds of Palestinian intellectuals inside Israel were detained, and later released and placed under house arrest. As a result of this widespread persecution, Kanafani asserts, “The rapid emergence of a literature of resistance did not happen by accident.”

In tracing Palestinian resistance literature, Kanafani commences with Tawfiq Fayyad’s play, House of Madness, in which the isolation of the protagonist, Sami, is portrayed to the audience as a beacon of memory and determination to resist, despite bouts of confusion as a result of persecution.

Of the body of Palestinian resistance literature, Kanafani states, “Through its depth of vision, the literature of resistance in occupied Palestinian thus fights on more than one front.” As the book continues with analysis of other literary works by different Palestinian writers, Kanafani notes that the social and political aspects are intertwined, and that Palestinian literature recognised the importance of this amalgamation early on in terms of resistance and liberation.

From more common themes of love and societal observations, Palestinian writers developed more complex themes in their literature that encompassed both history and socio-political realities. This in turn also widened to not only discuss the political realities faced by Palestinians in Israel, but also to unequivocally bind land and people in the face of oppression, as seen in the words of Mahmoud Darwish and Samih al-Qasim. Poetry, Kanafani also notes, was more suited than short stories for the rapidly evolving circumstances experienced by Palestinians living under Israeli occupation.

Palestinian resistance literature departs from “the axis of confronting Israeli occupation.” With this in mind, Kanfani gives other literary examples from Hanna Abu Hanna with lines such as: A people am I./ What if they jail one man?/ The entire people are in rebellion./If one poet is chained,/ the song will be sung by every poet.

From the depth of the Palestinian consciousness of, and commitment to, resistance, Kanfani notes that Palestinian poetry also embodies the international dimension as it lends its support to anti-colonial resistance movements globally. Darwish, for example, writes about Cuba, as well as Cuba and Algeria; the latter having been assisted by Cuba in its anti-colonial resistance: The flag of Cuba is one/ held high in the soul of a revolutionary/ in the Aures mountains of Algeria. Other Palestinian poets expressed support for various revolutionary figures and movements but, Kanafani notes, this expression for the international aspect of anti-colonial struggle “did not weaken its commitment to the immediate nature of the conflict.”
