Reviewed The Phoenix Project: A Novel About IT, DevOps, and Helping Your Business Win
This book is especially helpful to a person who needs to understand what DevOps is, with a very entertaining story that drives those concepts home. No making flash cards and late night studying. You will definitely understand what problem is tackled by DevOps, and maybe even giggle a few times.
I recommend this books with a few caveats. I understand what the authors were trying to accomplish, but you need to go into this book knowing what’s going on.
This book is great because it takes a topic, gives you real world examples, and explains everything to you each step of the way. I started listening to this book on a recommendation, and didn’t realize that it is a work of fiction. You should know that this book is about a fictional company, and it is purely theory.
I stress this because…well because of Atlas Shrugged. Much like Atlas Shrugged, this book has an ideal that it is trying to convince you of. So it has fictional situations and characters designed to drive that ideal home for you. This isn’t necessarily bad, but be mindful of it.

Catch and Kill
This is one of the more recent books that I have listened to on Audible. I knew a little bit about Harvey Weinstein and some of the crimes he had committed, but I never knew how deep this whole story went. Harvey’s behavior went on for years, with many people knowing about it. There were a lot of people who knew this was happening, and a lot of people who enabled his behavior because he was rich and powerful.
I recommend this book because there is so much more to this story than he did some bad things and lawyers and money kept it secret. There was a systematic effort to make individuals miserable if they dared speak out about what he had done. This was a premeditated, and often recycled plan to harass victims into accepting cash to keep them quiet.
This book also involves very powerful people playing to their best interests, and cold-war era type spies. Yes, spies. Like, check-social-media-to-find-out-where-your-are-to-follow-you-home type spies. The kind of spies that have pens with recording devices in them. The kind of spies that pretend to be informants, in order to glean information.
My estimation of the story when I first heard of it was that some rich guy paid a lot of victims and lawyers a lot of money so he could continue to be a predator. That is sinister, this was worse. This is a great listen, especially for anyone who still thinks that these victims were “asking for it”.
