<div>If I were rating this only on the writing quality and the conclusions reached, I would maybe feel like this is more of a 3.5. (Also, talking about a time you called the cops on your own party? as a humorous aside, writing in 2020? really, dude?) But at the same time, I also love a good nostalgic analysis of music and what makes it work, and have even written things like that myself, so let's round up.<br><br>I learned more about soul songs and a few other things I was not so familiar with, but also appreciated most of the thoughts on the songs that I do know. That said, I have zero problem with Rhythm Nation 1814 being a perfect album, Questlove! Okay, okay, we all have our favorites, so I'm sure Control hit him at the right time, just like Rhythm Nation hit me. It's not for me to say, really, and that's how we all have to go into music books — it's just an opinion, and of course he has done the research and has the musical background to come to the conclusions he has. It's all fine! If we all agreed, art would be much more boring.<br><br>Still, this was definitely worth the read.</div>

Rated Never Whistle at Night: An Indigenous Dark Fiction Anthology 8/10
<div>Like a lot of short story collections, there were some I liked better than others, but this was still a solid read. Some of the authors, I'd read and enjoyed before, and many here were new to me. I checked out from the library an audiobook by David Heska Wanbli Weiden right after I finished his short story. The editors didn't subtitle this "Dark Fiction" for nothing — many of the tales are grim, and there are a wide variety of horror subgenres represented here. Some are just dark tales. Worth a read. </div>
Rated My Dead Dad Was in ZZ Top: 100% Real*, Never-Before-Seen Documents from the World of Rock and Roll 8/10
This is a funny, quick-read book that probably does better with readers who are familiar with the musicians referenced throughout. One does not need in-depth knowledge, but having spent time listening to both classic rock radio and the first incarnation of MTV’s 120 Minutes certainly helps. There are not a lot of music books that reference Yo La Tengo, Bob Seger, Fleetwood Mac, and The Butthole Surfers within such a short collection of pages.<br><br>Glaser’s previous writing credits include <i>Late Night with Conan O’Brien</i> and <i>Saturday Night Live</i>, and like those shows, not every joke is hilarious, but there were certainly enough to keep me reading. He rides the line between stupid-funny and witty-funny well, and it would be a good book to give to a music-loving friend with a sense of humor. Is it anything groundbreaking? (Fuller review forthcoming) Though I think I'm slightly aged out in terms of life-stages covered in this book, I still loved the silliness and puns. And of course I fully support drinking while cooking. It's the best, as long as you don't injure yourself.
