I am so pleased to have finally gotten to this. Derek Jacobi brings both gravitas and menace to the Master, and the stories here are really good. Excited to carry on with more of the series.

I thought this would be more of a mystery/murder novel, really it was a deep look into a family's history and background. All the main characters get some viewpoint time and they are all very well developed, plus the plot of the story is sort of gradually revealed in flashbacks and partly through the police investigation. Also several short chapters with one-time viewpoint characters (mostly neighbours or friends of the family) show up too. I liked it a lot more than I was expecting too, maybe I'll try some of her other books too.

<div>Though I appreciate what this mag is trying to do in terms of prioritizing different voices in fantasy writing, unfortunately it doesn't bring much that I enjoyed. I liked a few things in here well enough (the Santería poem the most, maybe), but groaned at a LOT of the stories. Overcooked prose, badly in need of trimming, bangs out a thesaurus' most "whimsical" adjectives when a simpler approach would do. One interview was better than the other.<br><br>Just not for me, but at least it wasn't all bad. And it was short. I'm sure other issues are better, but I'm not in a hurry to find out.</div>
