What an excellent, honest, and illuminating memoir. Marcelo Hernandez Castillo brings us into his life as an undocumented-then-green-carded immigrant, and what it is like to not fully identify with the country of one's birth, nor of one's residence. The story of his parents' lives, both together and apart, is both heartfelt (without shying away from their flaws) and frustrating — frustrating in the sense that an immigrant's efforts to do things "right" is expensive, difficult, and draining, all for it to be arbitrarily denied because some official just wasn't feeling it that day. The writing is beautiful — unsurprising given Hernandez Castillo's poetry background — and I am so glad I read this.
