It's been a while, and we have quite a few new followers, so we wanted to do a quick tour of ACARS Drama, and what it is. You can always find all this info on acarsdrama.com:
ACARS messages are transmitted in the clear over VHF radio waves between passing planes and ground stations, they are usually intended for Airline operations control etc.
Most of the messages you see on ACARS drama are air to ground, because they are more easily captured. Sometimes you might see ground to air replies.
ACARS was originally designed in the 1970's as a mechanism for sharing OFF/OUT times, but like all tech, has grown in functionality, and is now used more like a SMS, but over VHF radio.
ACARS Drama is fed by a group of volunteers (sky drama farmers) who decode these messages using free /open source software, and feed them to our ingestion endpoint.
ACARS Drama processes every message that comes in, and looks for the interesting ones.
We receive over 200k messages an hour!
