Mist inspires silence.

Perhaps because it hides detail, blurs the sharpness of lines, de-focuses our view -- mist confuses us because it alters what we expect to see.

But it adds a touch of magic to the moment -- and it is, indeed, only a moment, because mist is temporary, transient, evanescent, ephemeral, something that we cannot grab and hold, grasp and hoard.

We focus on that which is important to us, at the moment.

For the mother, it was the child's hat. A strong breeze could easily blow it into the surf.
