One of my first paintings with color back in late 2022. I had only done monochromatic drawings most of my life, and wanted to teach myself color and painting. This is basically a colored drawing, and a big first step! It's called, "Cozy Cat."

As a child, I did not do well with the box of rocks in the geology session of science class. Separated from their environment, neatly docketed in their little spaces, they little held my interest.

But out in the real world where the rocks "lived," I was fascinated by their texture and form, color, placement, shape.

I like to learn about the real world, in the real world.

You hear the water before you see it, that soft, swishing sound as it falls down the short drop to the pool below.

"What IS that?" you stop and ask yourself, then keep walking until suddenly you see it, this clean cascade of movement, surrounded by lush greenery.

There is a cool mist in the air, as well as a calmness, and you stop to fully experience both.

This week I've been mainly reading, no. 244.

Richard Verdi's new Thames & Hudson World of Art volume on Velázquez (2023), is great on the art, presenting a chronological discussion of most of the painter's works, but much much weaker on the life & organisation of his studio. So, if you want to assess Velázquez oeuvre then this is the book for you, but if you like artists' biographies then give Verdi's well written but tightly focussed volume a miss.

One of the joys when I lived in London, was going to the Tate (only one then) & walking into a gallery where a Turner was displayed — the light! Wonderful! A friend introduced me to Turner, as well as the pleasure of returning to museums over & over & not trying to consume everything all at once. "Museums go to your feet," she would say, if you try to take everything in on one visit.
