Swedish author and illustrator Elsa Beskow died #OTD in 1953.

Beskow's first book, "Sagan om den lilla, lilla gumman", was published in 1897. It was followed by "Tomtebobarnen" (1910), "Pelles nya kläder" (1912) and "Tant Grön, tant Brun och tant Gredelin" (1918). In her honor, the Elsa Beskow Award was established in 1958 by the Swedish Library Association. This award is given annually to the best Swedish picture book illustrator.

The accompanying caption in Swedish explains that the elves (älvorna) lives behind a huge mossy boulder and come out at night to dance in the moonlight. The children of the forest (lit. the "w:tomte children") are trying to play w:seesaw with them, but the elves are so light and tender that even though they are eight and the children only two, they don't weight even.

Magic potions in various glass carafes and staffs were put in bookshelves. A treasure map and amulets show big plans. A desk with candles, quill, ink and a notebook show that someone is working hard on new enigmatic inventions.

We can see thunder outside the window. This is where magic, technology and chemistry are combined into a machine. Cables and parts are leading in various directions.

If you look at the last picture of this post with the library overview, you can also see an area where experiments are conducted, e.g. a spider will be transformed into a new creature.

The full library can be seen here. Next to the previous mentioned piano, poisons and machine room, we can see the main library with thousands of books protected by a wise owl "Boo hoo boo hoo!" and intricate skull decor.

Another part of the artwork shows the mirror room. Even the mirrors seem alive and love to spook around. Watch out! :) Taxidermied animals with glowing eyes can be found on the right side (lion, eagle, bear, rhino, hippo, warthog, bull, tiger). In a glass vitrine, precious animal skulls and bones are preserved.

In the upper right corner is a haunted dusty attic with spider webs, rusty tools and weapons ,a loom, old cloth, a still functioning gramophone, a forgotten coffin. Windows show the outside area with dead looking trees and a rather dark atmosphere.

..and then there is the ghostly maintenance staff room. Full of cleaning products, brooms, shovels, a warning sign for clean wet floors illuminated by a colder halogen light.

"Self-Portrait," Marie Benoist, 1786.

Marie-Guillemine Benoist (1768-1826) was obviously very talented, having painted this while only in her teens. And she went on to be an acclaimed neoclassical and historic painter. She was initially trained under Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun and later under Jacques-Louis David, so she had guidance from some of the top talent of her day.

She became an in-demand portraitist, and even had commissions from Napoleon Bonaparte himself. She enjoyed quite a big of success...until the Bonaparte era crumbled. In the face of growing conservatism in Europe, she tactfully retired from public life and only rarely painted.

I love the energy depicted here...it's so obviously the work of someone very young and very excited and confident.

Ladybird on four-leaf clover is a detail from the watercolor painting A lucky day painted by the artist Karen Kaspar. The original painting was painted in landscape format. The watercolor painting is built up of many layers of different bright fresh green tones and shows the abstracted detail of a wildflower meadow with many four-leaf clovers. On one of the clovers sits a red ladybird with black dots. Due to the strong complementary contrast between red and green, this little lucky ladybird is the focus of the picture and attracts attention. The four-leaf clovers and the ladybird are symbols of luck. I wish you that this picture brings a lot of luck and joy into your home.
