actuallyautistic
@autistics #ActuallyAutistic i'm back to work after 8 glorious days away and who is waiting to greet me with open arms:
Performative and Pretentious
At 66, first time in an airport autism sensory room. I was looking for quiet and got everything but that.
First observation. Typically, the supports are child oriented.
Second. The room is filled with flashing lights, droning repetitive music, etc. It was too much for me.
The one autistic kid was bouncing off the walls exploring.
If I were the parent I'd want to take the child to a zero sensory room to let them process the airport craziness.
I wanted to make explicit why I am so deeply opposed to even someone as incompetent and unscientific as RFK Jr' investigating autism for its "cause".
It is because in my reading of history, no one has ever looked for a "cause" of some human condition without at least considering the possibility of finding an off switch.
Now when we're talking cancer, that's good and appropriate. It kills people. Greed, too, should be carefully fought. It kills way more people.
But autism doesn't generally kill. Not directtly, certainly. It's just a different way of thinking and perceiving and being present in the world. It's not a disease, and autistic people don't need to be "cured".
And more importantly, humanity needs not to look for, let alone find or develop, that off switch.
It's flat out eugenics. The elimination of undesirables. Doing it before we're born doesn't make it okay. Doesn't make it morally right. We contribute to the world in many ways. To society. Even if we don't always understand it.
But we uphold the social contract. Well, unless someone figures out that it's all based on BS, then it gets trickier, but as a rule, we do uphold the social contract.
So yes. If someone says they're looking for the "cause" of something that doesn't actually harm anyone, like transgender identity, or nonbinaryness, or asexuality, or autism, or anything else that's frankly harming almost no one, start asking them *why* they want to find that cause. What do they want to do once they find it?
Cause you turn over enough rocks, sometimes you get the bugs with the swastikas on them.
I was just thinking about something I do that seems very autistic to me, but I haven't seen or heard of anyone else doing it, so I thought I'd ask.
Many years ago I made a chronology of my life. A timeline listing various events in my my life by date, such as places I've lived, places I've worked or went to school, relationships, organizations I've belonged to, I even have what cell phones I've used. This way I can reference not only what I was doing at various times, but also see for how long, in case I didn't know. I also have some details on there like the addresses of places I've lived. And since I made it I just update it with new information every so often. Some of the older information is not entirely complete since I had to go from memory, but there's still a good amount there. I have found the project both useful and fun.
So does anyone else do this?
One problem with winter is I hate socks.

- If I tell you I have bipolar syndrome, you'd think I'm crazy.
- If I tell you I'm autistic, you'd think I'm retarded.
- If I tell you I have a high IQ, you'd think I'm arrogant and conceited.
I don't need you to tell me anything to realize what you are...

What proportion of your classic autistic symptoms do you think are due to you being autistic, and what proportion may be due to trauma you've suffered?

@autistics #ActuallyAutistic some days i am tired of being the adult in the room
In enlightened countries we don't talk to parents about "the risk of homosexuality" in their children. We no longer try to find the gay gene because there are just too many. We don't send gay people to conversion therapy. Nobody talks about "high functioning gay men who can have sex with women to fit in". No fix necessary.
We still talk to parents about the "risk of autism", autism genes and conversion therapy or masking to fit in. Time for a change.
Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 772 , Monday 08/12/2025
Monday started just before 7am. Well actually it started about an hour earlier with next door deciding that 6am is a good time to start vacuuming the house!
Got breakfast & then sorted out my chores before we had to go out & about.
We spent a couple of hours at my MiL's house working our way steadily thru the mountain of stuff = today I nearly cleared out 3 small draws, I got distracted by the contents of a cupboard - ADHD is a bugger sometimes that & the whole completionist side of my autism kicking & & trying to keep me at it for longer than we had.
We made a small but noticeable dint in the whole house clearing project today.
We treated ourselves to lunch at a pub about 10 minutes away on the edge of the moors that does nice food but is quite expensive. Sadly they were so busy serving the corporate Christmas lunch folk that my steak & stilton sandwich was barely warm by the time it finally arrived.
We headed back after lunch &, after dropping off some books at a local charity shop we made our way to the undertakers. The Undertaker was a nice friendly chap & was happy to provide us with the initial details. We are somewhat stuck at the moment waiting on the MEs sign off of my MiLs death certificate. Once all the paperwork is sorted then we can get that particular ball rolling.
Drove home in the pouring rain after a quick visit to Sainsgogs to pick up a few essentials.
Got home just after 4pm & had a coffee & some rather nice chocolate cake that 'fell' into our shopping trolly in the shops!
I did us a light tea which we ate while watching a movie called 'The Holdovers' from 2023 - which was a nice slow paced comedy drama & we both quite enjoyed it.
Final Thoughts.
I'm still struggling to keep all the nuts I'm juggling in the air - hopefully once the boiler is replaced on Wednesday that will be one less thing to worry about!
Thank you to all those who are helping me on this journey, in a myriad different ways. I am thankful to each & every one of you! 🫂 🫶🐿️🖖

Now that I'm spending more time on Mastodon, I'm realizing I don't follow enough people. Many of them are inactive accounts.
My feed is running dry rather quickly.
Who are some good people in the autistic and neurodivergent spaces to follow?
This caught my attention. I don't know how accurate these figures are. Not without access to the original research to assess it. But if these are in any way close, then bloody hell. I've always been of the opinion that the majority of adults weren't diagnosed in one way or another. But these sorts of figures were surprising. In any case, it is good to see something like this in mainstream media and the consequences of it, being discussed.

Being surrounded by neurotypical people all my life, then finding the neurodiversity and autistic culture movements online and finding other @autistics like me, is like finally being given the guidebook on how to guide my manual car when I’ve been reading the guidebook for automatic cars all my life and struggling.
@autistics #ActuallyAutistic in today’s #DyspraxiaWins moment, i struggled to get five of these light switch locks installed…
…but once installed, they are the bees knees
@autistics #ActuallyAutistic another call, another person regretting asking me a question:
You put a dime in him, and you gotta let the whole song play out. —Dave, Ant-man and the Wasp
@autistics #ActuallyAutistic another day, another person tries to gaslight me thinking “going over my head" will get them what they want…
…as i tell my therapist often, “These people have no idea who they're fucking with.”
Worth mentioning that this shop proudly employs #actuallyautistic people, including the brilliant woman I met behind the counter. @autistics https://tenforward.social/@elight/115430374474195981

this is my canned comment to basically everyone
And the question today is am I going to fire the case management agency I've been working with today for being incompetent? OR are they going to drop me for "non-compliance"? Or are we going to keep going with this madness indefinitely?
The Reason why we don’t use the puzzle piece a the official logo for Autism Acceptance it’s because The Puzzle Piece makes us feel like Something is missing or something is wrong with us. Now The reason why we use the rainbow or gold infinity symbol instead for autism acceptance its because we are embracing who we are as people as well as expanding with other neurodivergent people. So Reject the Puzzle Piece and Embrace the Infinity symbol! #actuallyautistic #autismacceptance #neurodivergent
As an autistic person, I can often rely on alt text to understand memes. The thing is, memes expect its context to be automatically understood. Yet it is context that I can struggle with if it isn't presented. Therefore, sometimes memes can just look like nonsense to me at first.
It isn't until reading the description for blind people that the context is explained. So, I would argue strongly that alt text for accessibility goes beyond just those that can't physically see.
