Couldn't resist buying myself a new t-shirt in Newbury this morning:

@autistics #ActuallyAutistic this is the visual representation of my philosophy of overcoming out of spite

@autistics #ActuallyAutistic just had my haircut and i can feel like i can think again…
…my only ick is that my barber’s venue (not an owner) is so insanely bright…
…huge amount of long tube lights which i guess are better in general, but grinds my gears
I've always liked eye contact. However, since I started unmasking, I've noticed that there are many situations where I've started avoiding it. For instance, when walking among other people, or when it's my turn to talk.
With the former, I've understood eye contact with many people is actually really exhausting. There are so many processes that go with it.
With the latter, it's simply way easier to think and talk without maintaining eye contact. Earlier I did take strategic eye contact pauses where I looked into a certain direction. Now my eyes go all over the place.
Rephrase for our benefit.
Autists are looking to the outside world to try to understand our place in it. We are a minority of outward looking adventurers who need time to process all our inputs. Find a spot for ourselves in the external world.
Allists are inward looking, asking what the world can do for them. They need less time to focus since they already limit themselves inward. The majority of people are not adventurers,so find a spot in their internal world.
@autistics #ActuallyAutistic was walking through the local transit tunnel station and was bombarded with lights reminding me of the old gym lights…
…the ones that took forever to warm up and would go through various color chnages while they did…
…could this have been the core reason i hated gym all along?
After reading this review of #Apple Liquid Glass' usability (god-awful), I will avoid upgrading my #iPad as long as possible. I'll never ever buy another Apple product. Apple, when people have #autism, your candy-ass user interface is like fingernails scratching on a chalkboard - only it's their brains, not their eardrums. May you go bankrupt as swiftly as possible, and then all the museums spitefully bury their exhibits of your old hardware in a forlorn, forgotten corner of a wasteland. #ActuallyAutistic
@autistics
Does anyone else have these problems?
I can hear a squirrel move in a tree at a hundred yards or a slow leak in a tire as I walk by, but I can't understand the words spoken into my ear without effort. I can see a squirrel in a tree at a hundred yards or a small transparent mushroom at the foot of a wall, but I can't see words on packaging or signs without my full concentration.

My all time favorite autistic conversation is simultaneous info dumping.
Two autists appearing to be in regular conversation, but really mixing info dumps so that it seems like a regular conversation. Bit of info dump, bit of listening to another info dump, a few questions and insights to keep the other info dump going.
I particularly see this among my non realized autistic friends.
@autistics #ActuallyAutistic was recommended this show by a co-worker (only 2 of 8 episodes dropped) and 10 miniutes in to episide 1 and i’m already obsessed
@autistics #ActuallyAutistic i'm back to work after 8 glorious days away and who is waiting to greet me with open arms:
Performative and Pretentious
At 66, first time in an airport autism sensory room. I was looking for quiet and got everything but that.
First observation. Typically, the supports are child oriented.
Second. The room is filled with flashing lights, droning repetitive music, etc. It was too much for me.
The one autistic kid was bouncing off the walls exploring.
If I were the parent I'd want to take the child to a zero sensory room to let them process the airport craziness.
I wanted to make explicit why I am so deeply opposed to even someone as incompetent and unscientific as RFK Jr' investigating autism for its "cause".
It is because in my reading of history, no one has ever looked for a "cause" of some human condition without at least considering the possibility of finding an off switch.
Now when we're talking cancer, that's good and appropriate. It kills people. Greed, too, should be carefully fought. It kills way more people.
But autism doesn't generally kill. Not directtly, certainly. It's just a different way of thinking and perceiving and being present in the world. It's not a disease, and autistic people don't need to be "cured".
And more importantly, humanity needs not to look for, let alone find or develop, that off switch.
It's flat out eugenics. The elimination of undesirables. Doing it before we're born doesn't make it okay. Doesn't make it morally right. We contribute to the world in many ways. To society. Even if we don't always understand it.
But we uphold the social contract. Well, unless someone figures out that it's all based on BS, then it gets trickier, but as a rule, we do uphold the social contract.
So yes. If someone says they're looking for the "cause" of something that doesn't actually harm anyone, like transgender identity, or nonbinaryness, or asexuality, or autism, or anything else that's frankly harming almost no one, start asking them *why* they want to find that cause. What do they want to do once they find it?
Cause you turn over enough rocks, sometimes you get the bugs with the swastikas on them.
I was just thinking about something I do that seems very autistic to me, but I haven't seen or heard of anyone else doing it, so I thought I'd ask.
Many years ago I made a chronology of my life. A timeline listing various events in my my life by date, such as places I've lived, places I've worked or went to school, relationships, organizations I've belonged to, I even have what cell phones I've used. This way I can reference not only what I was doing at various times, but also see for how long, in case I didn't know. I also have some details on there like the addresses of places I've lived. And since I made it I just update it with new information every so often. Some of the older information is not entirely complete since I had to go from memory, but there's still a good amount there. I have found the project both useful and fun.
So does anyone else do this?
One problem with winter is I hate socks.

@autistics #ActuallyAutistic the disabled employee group i am semi-banished from functions like this…

- If I tell you I have bipolar syndrome, you'd think I'm crazy.
- If I tell you I'm autistic, you'd think I'm retarded.
- If I tell you I have a high IQ, you'd think I'm arrogant and conceited.
I don't need you to tell me anything to realize what you are...

What proportion of your classic autistic symptoms do you think are due to you being autistic, and what proportion may be due to trauma you've suffered?

@autistics #ActuallyAutistic some days i am tired of being the adult in the room
In enlightened countries we don't talk to parents about "the risk of homosexuality" in their children. We no longer try to find the gay gene because there are just too many. We don't send gay people to conversion therapy. Nobody talks about "high functioning gay men who can have sex with women to fit in". No fix necessary.
We still talk to parents about the "risk of autism", autism genes and conversion therapy or masking to fit in. Time for a change.
Now that I'm spending more time on Mastodon, I'm realizing I don't follow enough people. Many of them are inactive accounts.
My feed is running dry rather quickly.
Who are some good people in the autistic and neurodivergent spaces to follow?
This caught my attention. I don't know how accurate these figures are. Not without access to the original research to assess it. But if these are in any way close, then bloody hell. I've always been of the opinion that the majority of adults weren't diagnosed in one way or another. But these sorts of figures were surprising. In any case, it is good to see something like this in mainstream media and the consequences of it, being discussed.

Being surrounded by neurotypical people all my life, then finding the neurodiversity and autistic culture movements online and finding other @autistics like me, is like finally being given the guidebook on how to guide my manual car when I’ve been reading the guidebook for automatic cars all my life and struggling.
