Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 989 , Monday 13/07/2026
Up at crack of sparrows fart for the gym this morning, despite yesterday’s looooonnnnnnggggg day!
Yesterday started out at around 07:30 & after breakfast I cracked on with fitting the shelf over the window (which is actually comprised of 2 shelves that used to be in Mrs S’s study before the epic decorating episode.) sadly the wall is not plum or square or even flat so it
Was not as easy as it should have been.
Then came the fun bit - fitting the ‘easy fit’ roman blind from Dunelm Mills. The major problem ultimately being that it didn’t hang evenly because one of the cords was tied to the wrong length - I got VERY frustrated with it & I regret to report that I had a total meltdown over it.
Anyways that was all fitted by teatime.
After a quick break for something to eat I then had to put my room back together … why does tidying up ALWAYS take at least twice as long as the original job!
By the time I had done all that, installed the new dual monitor arms & the new bluetooth shelf speakers I treated myself to the other week it was gone 10pm. So by the time I came to write the diary I was exhausted, brain dead & still not a little peeved with the blind nd the world in general.
The blind does look the business though, it’s a proper blackout blind & for the first time since moving into that room as my bedroom I slept thru a summers dawn!
Sadly I didn’t get too much sleep as my body hated me for all the abuse I had given it!
Today has been another busy day. Once I got back from the gym & had had my breakfast we went over to my late MiL’s to clear out the 2 sheds in the garden. This was very messy as the roof had leaked & the mice had moved in. We did find a couple of things that were worth keeping but not much.
We also met with a rep from the ‘Clean and Clear’ company that has been hired to spruce the place up. The meeting went well & we await dates & a formal quote in the coming days.
Stopped off for lunch (gammon, egg n chips for me) on the way home then a very alzy afternoon watching ‘The Aviator’ from a few years back, & interesting film but one that I would probably not watch again - for one thing at nearly 3 hours long it did drag on a bit!
A light salad for tea with strawberries & ice cream for dessert.
Final Thoughts.
Yesterday left me frazzled & between my efforts then & todays work my spine is in open revolt! But on the other hand I do feel like I have achieved a lot & will go to bed a lot happier than I did last night!

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 957 , Thursday 11/06/2026
Actually got up at a reasonable hour this morning - around 07:15.
It has been a pants day weather wise - cold & wet! We literally had warmer days in the dead of last winter!
Looks like it might warm up next week though!
A quiet day roaming the galaxy today, merrily ignoring the rest of the world as it merrily ignored me.
Except for the text from my mum about her new phone number.
This was exceptional for 2 reasons:
1. She never texted anyone in her life!
2. She passed in 2019!
Bastard scammers - I posted about it on my MAJ1 a/c so others would be aware that it was going around.
Final Thoughts.
Not a bad day but still struggling to organise my thoughts, & still struggling to read all but the shortest chunks of text!
Thank you to all those who are helping me on this journey, in a myriad different ways. I am thankful to each & every one of you! 🫂 🫶🐿️🖖

@autistics #ActuallyAutistic after my normal bedtime and i’m sitting here tinkering with the latest #TapestryApp beta…
…more specifically consolidating and renaming Muffles and Mutes rules…
…damn you rabbit hole
One behavior that I've noticed among autistic people is picking a "substitute topic" and assuming that if "society in general" can understand this, they'll be able to abstract what they've learned in one area to other topics.
As if "if they realise racism is wrong, they'll also realise that sexism is also wrong" for example.
For me one of those topics was drug policy.(later UBI, LGBTQ+, etc.)
Unfortunately, most people don't possess this ability to abstract...
Defining Autism: The Shadow and the Object
The DSM defines autism by what clinicians can observe. But describing the shadow isn't the same as defining the object.
We know enough to define it. We don't yet know enough to test for it reliably. Conflating the two is a category error — and it has real consequences.

…and people complain i’m a lot
@autistics #ActuallyAutistic curious, who's the hero you’re holding out for?
This morning I made a comment in a sub-thread about how the word "mediocre" somehow felt to mean "below average" rather than just "average quality" to some people, (I was saying mediocre and mid literally have the same root so it clearly means mid), and someone commented, "communication is not just about being right".
Is this a neurotypical thing? "Communication is not just about being right"...
I'd say communication is not about being right at all, it's about transferring information between people. Being as *precise* as possible helps with conveying information, and precision is easier when words have narrow definitions. On top of that, having correct information is better than otherwise, I'd think.
And it doesn't end there. "...not just about being right" implies it is about being right but also other things. I hope getting ideas or information across is at least on the list somewhere, smh... so I don't really get why you would knowingly convey imprecise or incorrect information. Is it a social clout or hierarchy thing?
Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 958 , Friday 12/06/2026
Friday was a gym day so it started early at around 06:30.
Not a bad gym session, I actually managed to more or less stick to my routine!
The weather has been much sunnier & warmer today, which has been very welcome because I seem to be coming down with a cold! In June!!
The rest of the day passed peacefully & we had a KFC style takeaway for tea.
Final Thoughts.
Not a bad day, the whole reading thing is still a thing & coughing & spluttering thru the day with a nascent cold put a slight damper on things. But on the whole not too bad!

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 959 , Saturday 13/06/2026
Saturday started early at around 07:15.
Breakfast & chores, including cleaning all the floors upstairs - always fun!
There then followed a quiet day.
I seemed to have picked up a bit of a cold, a bit achy & snuffly today.
We watched Zootropolis 2 accompanied by a chinese takeaway.
Final Thoughts.
Not a bad day, I hope this bug is not going to get any worse!

Friday started early as is now the norm.
There are roadworks around the leisure centre where the gym I attend is based, it is making getting to the building … interesting!
Another quiet day once my chores were done.
Pizza for tea washed down with cider.
Final Thoughts.
Going for the small wins at the moment because the big wins are eluding me.

So, let's talk about 1976. At the time, I was in a "special needs" program at a school way bigger than the 2 room village schoolhouse I had been attending. The teachers at the new school encouraged all the students to write essays about the #AmericanRevolution -- the prize being a trip to Philadelphia to participate in the #Bicentennial. I managed to win the contest with a very graphic essay about #GeorgeWashington's troops in #ValleyForge (mentioning the possibility of #cannibalism -- one of my obsessions at the time, along with Zombies). Anyhow, in order to participate in the parade, we had to dress in period clothes. I *insisted* on having a boy-man's uniform (which I made in a very public interview with the local press), and I got my way! And marched with the boys/men, with the fife and drum squad and flag bearers (I played the flute). Unfortunately, I was there by myself, with no family to take photos of me. But here's a photo of the group I was part of. And bonus... I got to spend the night at Valley Forge, telling my tales of Revolutionary cannibalism!

@autistics #ActuallyAutistic it never ceases to amaze me the performative crap allistics can create to justify their existence...
…at the end of the meeting there was something so Romper Room level ridiculous, i wrote in huge letters in my notes:
This infomeme resonated well with me.

I've recently read the sentiment here (in the fedi) "I don't care why people do good things, as long as they do good things" and think this attitude really needs at least qualification.
Yes, we shouldn't discourage or attack people for being helpful to others for the "wrong reason", but we should still try to see those acts for what they are.
Otherwise we might both misjudge their current actions and mispredict their future actions.

Deficit or difference?
There are a few things about autism that it takes quite a lot of ingenuity to consistently frame them as negative.
I've listed some of them here...

Have not come across this before and it's interesting reading. (Among my thoughts: where is the boundary between providing a plain language version and not doing so?)
