Apparently 8bitdo now has a website for updating firmware in controllers, which they intend for Linux users (they recommend Windows and MacOS users continue downloading their firmware updater app).
I have an 8bitdo controller, so theoretically I could now update the firmware. The question I have is...why?
I have never updated the firmware of a controller in my life. Moreover, I have never updated the firmware of any peripheral.
I have never updated the firmware of a mouse.
I have never updated the firmware of a keyboard.
I have never updated the firmware of a speaker.
I have never updated the firmware of a pair of headphones.
I have never updated the firmware of a monitor.
I have never updated the firmware of a thumb-drive.
I have never updated the firmware of a charging cord.
And I don't understand why I'd want to. What's the benefit to me of updating the firmware on a device with a fixed function that it already performs? What have I been missing out on by not updating the firmware of my controller?
