Spring Awakening is a coming-of-age rock musical with music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater. It is based on the 1891 German play Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind. Set in late 19th-century Germany, the musical tells the story of teenagers discovering the inner and outer tumult of adolescent sexuality. In the musical, alternative rock is employed as part of the folk-infused rock score.

Following its conception in the late 1990s and various workshops, concerts, rewrites and its Off-Broadway debut, the original Broadway production of Spring Awakening opened at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on December 10, 2006. Its cast included Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele, and John Gallagher Jr. while its creative team comprised director Michael Mayer and choreographer Bill T. Jones. The original Broadway production won eight Tony Awards, including Tonys for Best Musical, Direction, Book, Score and Featured Actor. The production also garnered four Drama Desk Awards, while its original cast album received a Grammy Award. In addition, the show was revived in 2015 on Broadway and garnered three Tony Award nominations, among other honors.

The success of the Broadway production has spawned several other productions worldwide, including various US productions, a West End production that won four Laurence Olivier Awards including Best New Musical, and a series of international productions. In 2022, Spring Awakening: Those You've Known, a documentary film chronicling the 15-year reunion of the original company, was released on HBO.

第一景

1973年，法蘭克和查理受邀參加電視節目專訪。查理抱怨法蘭克不再專注於作曲，滿腦子只想著如何小錢滾大錢而已。瑪莉則安慰查理並保證法蘭克只是暫時忙昏頭了而已，並說服他要相信自己的老朋友（〈老朋友／像以前一樣〉（Old Friends／Like It Was）），希望三人的友誼能恢復到像從前一樣。就在節目開始之前，查理意外得知法蘭克在未告知他以前就簽下電影合約，準備中止籌備多時的新作，這點讓他大為不滿。兩人在全國電視節目聯播開始前惡言相向，節目開始後，精神崩潰的查理公開在節目中懇求法蘭克回到鋼琴前寫曲子，不要滿腦子都只想著賺錢-於是法蘭克醜惡的一面赤裸裸地在全國觀眾前揭露，兩人自此分道揚鑣（〈法蘭克薛伯企業有限公司〉（Franklin Shepard， Inc.））。

第三景
1968年，剛離婚的法蘭克結束一段長途旅行回到新居，他送給瑪莉一份禮物-她暢銷小說的西班牙文譯本，又送查理一份兩人合作的音樂劇電影改編版的合約書。查理對此事相當不滿，他希望能繼續在劇壇耕耘音樂劇場的園地，不希望一而再再而三地炒冷飯，重覆舊作，或者涉足電影圈，法蘭克則希望能多賺點贍養費。而瑪莉則居中協調，希望能停止這場爭吵（〈老朋友〉（Old Friends））。百老匯當紅炸子雞葛西與貌合神離的夫婿喬製作也造訪了法蘭克的新居，法蘭克獨自一人在鋼琴前彈起舊曲，感嘆感嘆友情維繫不易（〈成長〉（Growing Up））。葛西悄悄出現，告知法蘭克她準備和喬製作分手，希望兩人能長相廝守。

第四景
一年半前，在地方法院。法蘭克因原配夫人貝絲握有他鬧婚外情的電話錄音，而遭貝絲申請離婚判決，諸當事人在步出法院時碰個正著。貝絲質問法蘭克到底有沒有和葛西上床，法蘭克則是一直重申他對貝絲的愛依舊不變，貝絲想起自己對法蘭克付出的真情真意，悲慟欲絕（〈日復一日〉（Not A Day Goes By））。瑪莉、查理等好友們則建議他去度個長假，畢竟，現在事情發展的狀況或許已經是最好的結果了。〈Now You Know〉。

第二幕

第一景
1964年，葛西獨自在空蕩蕩的舞台上，為查理、法蘭克為她量身訂作的新戲首演做最後的暖身，她試唱了〈好事正臨〉（Good Thing Going），場景一轉，在首演的舞台上，這首肥大、妖冶、煽情、媚俗的歌曲廣受歡迎，如雷的歡呼不斷地從觀眾席傳過來，查理、貝絲、瑪莉等人在後台歡喜異常，而法蘭克受到掌聲的洗禮，更如嗜毒的癮君子一般，完全無法自拔，絲毫沒有聽見耳邊曾響起過，不知當年是誰發出的議論：「音樂劇是一種很偉大的發明…它可以把你想講的東西全部用音樂唱出來…用舞蹈跳出來…用戲演出來…我們可以改寫世界文明史…」。

第二景
1962年，葛西和喬製作在家中舉辦了一個大型宴會，邀請了政商名流、演藝界人士以及苦候成名機會的小演員、小作曲家、小編劇等（〈這一橐食客〉（The Blob!）），法蘭克、查理和貝絲也受邀參加。葛西故意支開貝絲和喬製作，好讓自己有機會和法蘭克獨處。葛西表示她和丈夫願意提拔法蘭克替她量身訂作一部新歌舞劇，法蘭克忙不迭地出賣了自己與查理的理想，答應了這個好差事，葛西於是向眾賓客宣布法蘭克和查理將表演「我們即將推出的新戲裡的歌曲」。查理勉強定心唱完恬靜幽謐的小曲-〈好事將臨〉（Good Thing Going），眾食客報以如雷的掌聲，紛紛慫恿兩人再唱一次，查理老大不爽，法蘭克不懂所謂的見好就收，堅持與他合唱，慢慢地，他們的歌聲漸次淹沒在賓客們的談笑聲中…

1960年，市中心的一家小夜總會。貝絲、查理和法蘭克三人正在台上表演（〈Bobby And Jackie And Jack〉），葛西和喬製作坐在台下欣賞演出，法蘭克向前作自我推銷，葛西雖先行離去，卻對法蘭克頗具好感，強迫與之熱戀中的喬製作留下來參加法蘭克與貝絲的婚禮，場內某賓客與喬製作咬耳朵，說貝絲未婚懷孕，法蘭克奉兒女之命才步上紅毯云云，查理適時出現闢謠，並私下向法蘭克坦白貝絲的現況，希望法蘭克不要因為貝絲以「懷孕」騙婚就拒絕這位賢妻佳侶，法蘭克呆立原地，難以下定決心，貝絲身著婚紗出現，法蘭克終於咬牙踏上紅毯。這一切都看在瑪莉眼裡，瑪莉只得將自己對法蘭克多年來的摯情深深埋藏在心底，法蘭克與貝絲在眾人見證下立下婚盟，台邊燈光一照，瑪莉在人群一角暗自飲泣，三人隔空對唱著愛的戀歌〈日復一日〉（Not a Day Goes by）。

第四景
