The Ideon: A Contact is a compilation movie of the first thirty-two episodes of Space Runaway Ideon. It was released alongside its sequel, The Ideon: Be Invoked, on a double bill in 1982.
Synopsis: A Buff Clan ship, under the command of Gije Zaral, DS-outs near the Earthling colony of Solo. It is on a mission to look for the legendary Ide, a source of infinite energy.

その大地を駆ける暴走族、サンドラット団は、ウォーカーマシンに襲われたところを、負傷した少年ジロンに助けられた。サンドラットの女リーダーのラグは、このジロンに興味津々。なにしろ手負いの身ながらたった一人で、ブルーストーンの運び屋キャリング・カーゴが開くバザーに乗り込み、ウォーカーマシンを分捕ろうというのだ。バザーにはキャリングの用心棒や、無法の星に似つかわしい荒くれ者ばかりが揃っている。そんな所に乗り込んで行こうと言うジロンが目指す獲物は、なんと！　キャリングの新鋭ウォーカーマシン「ザブングル」！！

1983年7月9日に公開された、テレビ版を編集して新作カットを加えた劇場版。配給は松竹、併映は高橋良輔監督の『ドキュメント 太陽の牙ダグラム』、『チョロQダグラム』。当初から併映前提で制作され、上映時間が90分以内という制約があったため、主要な物語を詰め込む総集編とせず、楽屋落ちを織り込んだ回想形式の作品となった。セル塗りを途中で止め、あえて動画を直接撮影したシーンに、「これが動撮だ!間に合わないとこうなっちゃう」とテロップが入れられた部分もあった。

また、ラストはエルチとジロンを中心に皆が走るところまでは一緒だが、死亡したと思われたアーサー・ランクが登場し、失明したエルチに対して治療を申し出るというものになっている。この改変について富野は「誰も死なない作品」とするとの決定の元に制作されたこともあり、「TV版でのアーサーの死とエルチの失明が、作品全体のムードに対して後味の悪い物として心に引っかかっていたため」とコメントしている。

U.C. 0097, one year after the opening of "Laplace's Box". Despite the revelation of the Universal Century Charter that acknowledges the existence and rights of Newtypes, the framework of the world has not been greatly altered. The conflict later dubbed the "Laplace Incident" is thought to have ended with the downfall of the Neo Zeon remnants known as the Sleeves. In its final battle, two full psycho-frame mobile suits displayed power beyond human understanding. The white unicorn and the black lion were sealed away to remove this danger from people's consciousness, and they should now be completely forgotten. 吉恩突击小队作战失败后，小队唯一幸存者巴尼接到了立即撤离SIDE6的指示。因为吉恩军没有机会再组织力量破坏高达，于是他们打算圣诞夜之前，用核弹摧毁整个宇宙殖民地。巴尼得知消息后，要求阿鲁立即通知家人与克丽丝尽早离开殖民地，但遭到阿鲁的反对。阿鲁希望自己心中的优秀驾驶员巴尼，能击溃阿历克斯挽救殖民地的命运，于是巴尼只得一个独自离开。
警方无法相信阿鲁的报警，置之不理。同时，吉恩军搭载核弹头的攻击舰已驶离母舰。阿鲁面对朋友与家人几欲绝望，此刻在机场，巴尼正犹豫不决，最终，他下定决心，为了阿鲁与心爱的克丽丝，以及殖民地的人们，向阿历克斯发出最后的挑战。在阿鲁的协助下，他修复了初次袭击SIDE6时被击落的扎克，用唯一的武器--能量斧对NT-1发起了攻击。与此同时，阿鲁从父亲的口中得知了吉恩军将于数日后签定终战协议，他飞奔着跑向巴尼战斗的地方，但在他面前支离破碎的NT-1的光束剑，已刺穿了扎克的座舱。而救护人员从NT-1的座舱中抢救出的联邦驾驶员那一头秀丽的红发，更使阿鲁呆然……

U.C.（宇宙世纪）0079年，人类向宇宙发展并建立了多个巨大的卫星，让人类能够居住在宇宙中。卫星的居民们不堪忍受地球联邦政府对其剥削和压迫，遂宣布独立，更组建军队与地球联邦政府决一雌雄。在战争中双方先后开发了机动战士并投入战场。NEWTYPE少年阿姆罗·雷无意中驾驶上联邦军新开发的机动战士高达，卷入后来被称为“一年战争”中，并与其宿敌夏亚·阿兹纳布尔相遇。

故事舞台是在机动战士高达中的一年战争终结后七年。战争结束后一部份吉恩公国军事势力并未降伏继续在各地与地球联邦军发生军事冲突，因此地球联邦军内部强力主张追杀吉恩残余份子的激进排他势力泰坦斯（Titans）结成。由于泰坦斯对宇宙住民的强硬血腥镇压的手段，反势力奥干A.E.U.G.(台湾翻译为奥干，港译为奥古)结成。故事的开始于宇宙世纪0087年（U.C. 0087），前半主要围绕奥干和泰坦斯两派系的对抗，中段吉恩残余份子上阿克西斯(港译为阿古捷斯)登场，与奥干、泰坦斯角力周周旋，展开激战。

With its mobile suits, ZAFT is able to overwhelm the Earth forces on many fronts, but the war drags on longer than expected. Eleven months after the "Bloody Valentine," a young Coordinator named Kira Yamato is caught up in ZAFT's Gundam capture operation. Also involved in this operation is Kira's former friend Athrun Zala, who has become a ZAFT soldier. Amid the flames of war, the two are fatefully reunited. But in order to protect his Natural friends, Kira boards the Strike Gundam, the only one which has escaped capture, and now faces Athrun as an enemy...

In the year C.E.70, the conflict between the Z.A.F.T. Forces and the O.M.N.I. Enforcer has erupted into armed warfare of the highest intensity in the wake of the "Bloody Valentine" catastrophe. An armistice is signed following the Second Battle of Yakin Deyue, which saw massive casualties, but no armistice could extinguish the hostilities that existed between the Naturals and the Coordinators. Shinn Asuka finds himself caught up in the O.M.N.I. Enforcers' Orb Operation, and sees his parents and sister killed before his very eyes by the fighting.

Universal Century 0068, Side 3 - The Autonomous Republic of Munzo. Zeon Zum Deikun attempts to declare complete independence of Munzo from the Earth Federation Government, while he preaches the evolutionary potential of humans who have advanced into outer space. Deikun however suddenly falls to his death in the middle of his speech at parliament. Upon Deikun's death, Jimba Ral spreads word of a House of Zabi conspiracy - but despite such efforts the power and sphere of influence of House of Zabi, led by Degwin Sodo Zabi, only seem to escalate. While we witness for the first time the untold convulsions of Universal Century history, Casval and Artesia, just bereaved of their father, must face destinies which will be just as tumultuous as the very era itself.

Universal Century 0087. The Titans, a bellicose faction among the Earth Federation Forces, grows powerful and tyrannical, even using poison gas to suppress a civil unrest. Dissident soldiers from the same military stand against them, forming a resistance group called the AEUG. Kamille Bidan, a civilian student, gets entangled in this conflict when he impulsively steals the Gundam Mark II and joins the AEUG, running away from his home space colony. Then he begins to fight along with Char Aznable, a former Zeon ace pilot who has infiltrated the Earth Sphere for reasons of his own. This is the first part of the feature trilogy derived from the anime series Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, and features enhanced animation and theme songs by GACKT.
