The third movie in the OVA series is a sequel to episode 18, which has new enemies (Cy Quo Adder and Plater Quiz) and new Heavy Metal mechas.

On the planet Zora exist two societies: the Innocent, an advanced culture that lives in domed cities, and the Civilians, who are forced to live in the harsh desert wilderness. As dictated by the Innocent, any Civilian that commits a crime is forgiven if they are not brought to justice within three days. Civilian Jiron Amos seeks revenge on the villainous outlaw Timp Sharon who murdered his parents, despite the fact the three-day period has long since passed. Hoping to get his revenge by stealing the mecha Xabungle from the merchant Carrying Cargo, Jiron teams up with a group of bandits known as the Sandrats and kidnaps Cargo's daughter Elchi, who ends up being sympathetic to his cause. Jiron's quest for revenge soon grows into a conflict much bigger—one that will eventually see the Civilians rise up against the Innocents' rule.

The Universal Century, a history marked by space colonization and space warfare, has passed. The year is Universal Century 0088. Directly after the end of the Gryps War, Haman Karn and her army of Zeon remnants on the asteroid Axis begin their quest of reviving the lost empire of the Zabi's, and proclaim themselves as the Neo-Zeon. With the Earth Federation as hapless as ever, only the Anti-Earth Union Group (AEUG) is able oppose the plans of Neo-Zeon. In need of all the help it can get after being decimated in the previous war and losing many of its key members, the AEUG ship Argama enlists the aid of a young junk collector from the Side 1 colony of Shangri-La named Judau Ashta to pilot its newest mobile suit, the ZZ Gundam.

In UC 0093, the Federation has recovered from its defeat and has created a new anti-colonial special forces unit to deal with rebel forces: Londo Bell. Elsewhere in space, Char Aznable reappears out of self-imposed hiding with a declaration that he now commands his own Neo-Zeon movement, and intends to force the emigration of Earth's inhabitants to space by bringing about an apocalypse.

作品概要
1972年4月1日から同年9月30日までABC制作、ABCをキー局にTBS系で毎週土曜日19時00分から19時30分に全27話が放送された。本作より、この枠はTBS制作番組からABC制作番組に変更になっている。
元々は連載終了後に、手塚治虫が手塚プロダクションでアニメ化する予定でパイロット版が制作された。しかし、虫プロダクションの経営悪化による混乱の中、アニメ化の権利を手塚のマネージャーだった西崎義展が取得して、テレビ局への放送の売り込みに成功した。西崎のテレビアニメ初プロデュース作品であり、富野喜幸（現・富野由悠季）の初監督作品となる。虫プロ商事のスタッフを中心に設立されたアニメーション・スタッフルームで製作されることとなった。実際に制作の中心となったスタジオは主に東映動画のテレビアニメシリーズの下請けをこなしていた朝日フィルムで、監督の富野は虫プロ系のスタッフが使えなかったと後に述べている。そのため、キャラクターデザインに東映動画出身の羽根章悦を起用したのも、虫プロではなく新しいものに挑むという基本方針の下、あえて手塚治虫調ではないキャラクターを選択したものであった。
こうした製作の経緯があったため、手塚は秋田書店版の単行本のカバー袖のコメントで「テレビまんがのトリトンは自分のつくったものではない」、講談社の手塚治虫漫画全集のあとがきで「自分は原作者の立場でしかない」と読者に断っている。これについて富野は、手塚は原作を失敗作だと考えていたのではないかと推察し、ストーリーの改変についても、かなり自由に任せてくれたとも回想していた。
アニメ版では原作にあったトリトン族と人間との関わりの部分を切り捨て、物語全体の鍵を握る「オリハルコンの短剣」を登場させて、圧倒的な敵を相手に戦闘が成り立つことを説明している。本作は『鉄腕アトム』や『リボンの騎士』などとは異なり、虫プロの色である手塚治虫のスターシステムキャラクターは全く登場しなかった。
本作は富野喜幸の初監督作品として、守るべきものに追われる主人公、主人公たちが作る共同体、トリトン族が悪でありポセイドン族が善という善悪逆転の衝撃のラストが後の『無敵超人ザンボット3』に繋がるとしてしばしば比較される。
ケイブンシャが発行した『大百科シリーズ112 世界の怪獣大百科』では、本作に出てきた一部のポセイドン族やメドンが紹介されている。
アニメ史上における評価
本作は『宇宙戦艦ヤマト』以前に高年齢層に人気を博した作品で、アニメブームの先駆者として重要とされる作品である。日本で初めてファン主体のテレビアニメのファンクラブが作られたとも言われる作品で、とりわけ女性ファンの人気が高かった。1972年結成の『海のトリトン』ファンクラブの「TRITON」がそのファンクラブとされる[17]。さらに録音スタジオには、トリトン役の塩屋翼を目当てに女子中学生や女子高校生が見学に訪れるという後のアニメ声優ブームの先駆けとなる現象も見られた[18]。
後に西崎の『宇宙戦艦ヤマト』と富野の『機動戦士ガンダム』が大ヒットしたことで、本作は再評価された。1978年1月25日には、「アニメ愛蔵盤シリーズ」の1作として本作のサウンドトラック『海のトリトン』(CS-7044)が発売され、オリコンLPチャートで最高4位を記録した。

After a motocross accident, Sho Zama was pulled from Japan into the mystical world of Byston Well, where he and others from Earth were reicruited by Lord Drake Luft to pilot his newest weapons, the Aura Battlers, a combination of Byston Well magic and Earthien technology. Amuro Ray and the rest of the White Base crew, now denominated the 13th Autonomous Corps, return to outer space to support the rest of the Earth Federation forces for the decisive battle against the Principality of Zeon's forces.

5,000 years ago, the Triton Family was living peacefully in Atlantis until the Poseidon Family destroyed them all. Triton, of the Triton Family line, embarks on an adventurous life in the sea fighting the Poseidon Family.

In a future, decimated Earth after the discovery of a mysterious, alien spacecraft dubbed "Orphan". A group of researchers scour the planet for Orphan's disc plates using mecha called "Antibodies" in order to revive the craft, an event that would result in the utter destruction of all lifeforms on Earth. The protagonists Yu Isami and Hime Utsumiya must utilize a special Antibody called "Brain Powerd" to counter the Orphan plans and save humanity.
