剧场版《三国志》由日本德间书屋制作，力求将它打造成一部招牌作品。该动画由《英雄的黎明》、《燃烧的长江》、《遥远的大地》共三部分组成，一共6集。从1987年开始绘制，91年制作完成，耗时四年有余。为了营造出真正的中国风格，制作人员曾数次赴中国各地进行实景、实物取材，并有专人负责时代、事件考证，甚至专门找来中国音乐家演奏古筝、二胡等我国传统乐器。在这么缜密的准备工作后，就是中国人看了也不得不佩服其确实下了一番苦功。
《英雄的黎明》主要讲述刘备的早期辛苦创业史，《燃烧的长江》以赤壁之战前因后果为主，《遥远的大地》是蜀地、荆州的争夺和后期诸葛亮的苦苦撑持，三部分构成一部以蜀汉历史为主的三国画卷，在详细描述战争的同时，更注重乱世中的人性刻画与英雄形象的塑造。总的来说，故事是比较尊重原著的，但也许是负责脚本的笠原和夫觉得三国里女性人物和感情戏太少了吧，所以加入了两位原创女性人物。一位是刘备的夫人丽花，她与刘备的感情可谓历经种种磨难，好不容易才迎来二人的结合，但短暂的幸福后，最终她还是在长阪坡死去。另一位就是关羽的女儿、诸葛亮的义女、后来马谡的妻子凤姬，她充当了第三部中的线索人物和第二主角，但也承受了先后失去父亲、丈夫、义父的无限痛苦。在这两位女性的经历中，三国的悲剧性得到了充分的体现。
