『あかいくらやみ〜天狗党幻譚』（作・演出）、『マクベス』（演出）と、シアターコクーンの空間に挑戦的で壮大な世界を生み出して来た長塚圭史。蜷川幸雄演出『太陽2068』で近未来SFを確かな筆致で描き出し、近年は映画（入江悠監督『太陽』原作・脚本、今秋公開の黒沢清監督『散歩する侵略者』原作）でも活躍するなど、今、最も注目される劇作家・前川知大。演出家脳／作家脳を持つ二人が、一年以上にわたって刺激的な打ち合わせを重ね、着々と準備してきたサスペンスフルな舞台がいよいよお目見えする。
舞台はとある劇場。国民的スターから地元の大学生まで、あらゆるキャリアを持つ俳優やスタッフが集まり、リハーサルが行われている。演目は、死者の言葉が生きている人間を通して「再生」されるという戯曲『PLAYER』。その劇中劇と、俳優たち（Player）が戯曲に書かれた言葉を再生（Play）する稽古場の世界が併走し、行ったり来たりしながら、その境界線はだんだんと曖昧になる。現実か、虚構か。
