時は江戸時代中期、舞台は歌舞伎の黄金期を迎えようとする芝居街・日本橋堺町。江戸三座と称される劇場や芝居茶屋がひしめくこの芸能の町に、ひとりの孤児が運命的に流れ着く。中村座で唄方を務める男と、振り付けを教える女の夫婦に養子にもらわれたこの孤児こそ、歌舞伎史上不世出の天才役者と呼ばれるようになる初代中村仲蔵である。 養母の厳しい稽古で踊りの才能を開花させた仲蔵は、役者として舞台に立つ夢を膨らませるが、血筋がものをいう歌舞伎界の高い壁が立ちはだかる。しかし芝居に取り付かれた若者は、無謀にも最下層の大部屋役者から成り上がる下剋上の道を選んだ。歌舞伎界の頂点を巡って裏切りや策謀が渦巻く舞台裏の抗争に巻き込まれつつも、ひたすら芸の道を疾走する仲蔵。しかし彼を待っていたのは苛烈な“楽屋なぶり"だった。

Just when about to commit suicide after being deserted by his bride-to-be during the wedding, a man meets a university professor who is also at the point of killing himself. A woman nearby intervenes, one thing leads to another, and the three lost souls move in together. Each episode is a distinct story about the sometimes painful, sometimes warm romances between them and the people they meet while sharing an apartment.

The story takes place over a 24 hour period. In the southernmost part of Japan, 20 fishing boats of an unknown nationality suddenly fire upon and occupy parts of the Hateruma archipelago. Members of the Japan Coast Guard are detained. Under the extremely tense situation, the Japanese government sends Aircraft Carrier Ibuki and an escort fleet to the area. Ryota Akitsu is the captain of the Aircraft Carrier Ibuki and Toshiya Niinami is second-in-command. It is now 6:23 am. and Japan faces one day which they never have before.

歌舞伎が黄金期に向かう江戸時代中期、彗星の如く現われた破天荒な歌舞伎役者、初代・中村仲蔵（なかむらなかぞう）。梨園の血縁ではない彼は、四代目・市川團十郎に見出されて異例の出世を遂げ、一代で「名人仲蔵」と言われるまでの大スターになった。その波乱万丈の人生は、今でも落語や講談でも語り継がれる人気演目である。



この痛快無比の中村仲蔵の物語はドラマ化され、2022年度文化庁芸術祭テレビドラマ部門の大賞をはじめ、数多くのテレビ賞を受賞。その脚本・演出を務めた源孝志が、今回、新たな視点でオリジナルの舞台戯曲として書き下ろす。演出には2017年赤坂大歌舞伎にて新作歌舞伎の作・演出も務めた蓬莱竜太。中村仲蔵役を演じるのは日本を代表する演技派俳優の藤原竜也。

It's three years after the events of the original Battle Royale, and Shuya Nanahara is now an internationally-known terrorist determined to bring down the government. His terrorist group, Wild Seven, stages an attack that levels several buildings in Tokyo on Christmas Day, killing 8000 people. 『あかいくらやみ〜天狗党幻譚』（作・演出）、『マクベス』（演出）と、シアターコクーンの空間に挑戦的で壮大な世界を生み出して来た長塚圭史。蜷川幸雄演出『太陽2068』で近未来SFを確かな筆致で描き出し、近年は映画（入江悠監督『太陽』原作・脚本、今秋公開の黒沢清監督『散歩する侵略者』原作）でも活躍するなど、今、最も注目される劇作家・前川知大。演出家脳／作家脳を持つ二人が、一年以上にわたって刺激的な打ち合わせを重ね、着々と準備してきたサスペンスフルな舞台がいよいよお目見えする。
舞台はとある劇場。国民的スターから地元の大学生まで、あらゆるキャリアを持つ俳優やスタッフが集まり、リハーサルが行われている。演目は、死者の言葉が生きている人間を通して「再生」されるという戯曲『PLAYER』。その劇中劇と、俳優たち（Player）が戯曲に書かれた言葉を再生（Play）する稽古場の世界が併走し、行ったり来たりしながら、その境界線はだんだんと曖昧になる。現実か、虚構か。
