Literary Companions

Some books stay — not just on shelves, but somewhere quieter. Somewhere closer.

These are the pages that walked beside me,
that held a light during darker hours,
that whispered truths I hadn’t yet found the words for.

Why are these companions?

  • Because they remembered me.
  • Because I found myself in the margins.
  • Because they changed the pace of my thinking.
  • Because I finished them… and wasn’t finished with them.
  • Because returning feels less like rereading and more like coming home.

Fiction or not, story or study, these are bound not just by ink — but by something deeper.

They are books I return to,
books that returned something in me,
soulbound and well-loved,
with memories nestled softly between the lines.

The Veil [Book] Goodreads
author: William Bowden Amazon Digital Services
An alternate cover for this ASIN can be found here.

We are not alone in the Universe—the age of innocence is over, and the time of the Veil upon us.

Industrialization, war, technological advancement. It is a common transitional period. A civilization that destroys itself during the process is not a threat to those who observe from afar.

And in this regard the Veil is many things, its purpose to deliver mankind from temptation, its goal to aide a swift conclusion.

This space odyssey is the third book in the series by the same name, though it can be read on its own merits, the first two books telling of the events that shaped those involved.

Aurora [Book] Goodreads
author: Perry Elisabeth Kirkpatrick 2018 - 2
Rigel and Rion Wyatt have just won the Spaceracer Championship. The young men are on top of the world until an enslaved girl named Aurora challenges everything they know about their sport. Determined to set her free, the twins must execute a daring plan with all the finesse a champion Spaceracer team can muster.

Aurora is part of Mydlands, a Creative Commons sci-fi universe. It is a short story (approx. 17 minutes average reading time).
Yohan Yukiya Sese Cuneta 사요한 📇: Now there's another story to tell. This one feels like a teaser to something bigger, dangerous, and outright impossible for the characters. With the introduction of abilities and technologies, the Mydland Universe gets even more interesting. Although I'd like to clarify if the Mydland license of CC By extends to this work since I noticed it is "All Rights Reserved".
Stronger for Language [Book] Goodreads
author: Perry Elisabeth Kirkpatrick 2018 - 1
Kenzie discovers she has unique skills from hours spent translating what her twin 3-year-olds are saying. She just might save the day when her husband, the starship's captain, gets into a linguistic pickle with a new alien race!

Stronger for Language is part of Mydlands, a Creative Commons sci-fi universe.

This is a short story (approx. 16 minutes average reading time).
Yohan Yukiya Sese Cuneta 사요한 📇: Now that was hilarious and refreshing! I enjoyed reading this scifi short story because of the very casual, normal approach. I also love how this isn't your typical "professional" and "serious" type of scifi. Perry's approach here is out-of-the-box as far as space scifi is concerned. A toddler-language translator, crazy little twins, "Mother-of-the-Future" reverence, and an alien with humour on a not-so-typical First Contact encounter. We've been so serious and professional when it comes to space scifi that we have created a box of do's and dont's. This short story reminds us to keep natural, realistic, and to just have fun in writing.
Pioneer Horizon [Book] Goodreads
author: Denver Evans / Perry Elisabeth Kirkpatrick 2018 - 1
A group of scientists and the Marines assigned to guard them are on the surface of planet Novus-147 assessing it for potential human colonization. When a deadly storm rolls in with no warning, they lose contact with the USS Calypso in orbit overhead.

Will they survive? Will they be able to reestablish contact?

Pioneer Horizon tells the origin story of the planet Nidus and its original settlers. It is part of Mydlands, a Creative Commons sci-fi universe.

This is a short story (approx. 14 minutes average reading time).
Yohan Yukiya Sese Cuneta 사요한 📇: A perfect story for a new colony. Choosing it to be a short story was good as well, as establishing a new colony doesn't have to be overly deep and lengthy to tell. Perry captured what would have been like to venture into the unknown, not expecting the worst that could happen, the fear and uncertainty when reality hits us, and survival or moving on with life.

Yohan Yukiya Sese Cuneta 사요한 📇: I'm glad I discovered this series after it was completed. It help keep the excitement and suspense of continuously flowing from the first page of the first novel to the last page of the 7th & last book. 36,800+ ebook pages swipes in total, this is by far the longest compiled series I've read and I am glad that I discovered this series. There are so many characters that were well developed who are real people. The novel arcs and the series arcs were also intricately interwoven that will keep any reader to keep turning to.the next page. I also like how it was written from a third-person narrator perspective from various character viewpoints instead of the currently prevailing first-person style. It added a depth to the story and it made sure how vast the events taking place are. It is also refreshing to see that Earth was but an extra instead of the main focus or the protagists being full-blooded earthlings. It gives us, the readers, a different perspective on what could be the reality of our universe. I hoped that the story of the twins were further explored, this was the best part of the whole series for me when they were introduce. As was repeatedly said, "fresh perspective" because that's what they brought even to the readers. I also hope to see a sequel soon, this time with earth playing a role for the first time. Until then, it was a blast!
Maelstrom [Book] Goodreads
author: Peter Cawdron 2017 - 5
Tunguska, Roswell, the Bermuda Triangle, the Mary Celeste... For hundreds of years, the danger posed by colliding worlds has been ignored as a crackpot theory, until now, and now it's too late.

Maelstrom contains three novellas set in the Colliding Worlds universe (Collision, Impact and the conclusion, Maelstrom). Collision was commissioned by Vanquish Motion Pictures for possible development in film or on television.
Yohan Yukiya Sese Cuneta 사요한 📇: A fast-paced short story trilogy that brings forth the what-ifs in spacetime travel and possibilities. I like how spacetime was insisted for it is how I view it as well, inseparable and thus 3 or 4 dimensional, something most space and time fictions forget. It would be interesting to know about the other worlds in another story. This trilogy felt like it was a teaser to a grander adventure, filled with moral challenges and causal loops. And more in-depth exploration of the author's take on the dimensions of spacetime.

Rogue Magic [Book] Goodreads
author: N.R. Hairston Fire Ink Media, LLC 2017 - 9
alternate cover edition of ASIN B075YGLN4P

My name’s Rekia, and I’m wanted dead or alive.

So, how does a small town girl from the south end up in the fight for her life between two powerful worlds? It’s simple. I have the ability to open portals to alternate dimensions.

This works out great for my business. I take crooks, thieves, criminals on the run from the law, etc. . . and I hide them where they’ll never be found- in one of the many alternate worlds- for a small fee of course.

Everything’s going fine until I discover a secret plot between two powerful worlds that could have widespread conquests across all dimensions. Now I’ve made enemies of the wrong people, and they’re coming for me.

I could walk away. I could hide myself on some inconspicuous world and never look back. Except, there’s a fire in my gut now, and like a dog with a bone, I’m not letting this go.

So instead of hiding, I crack my neck, flex my hands, and tell them to bring it. This may very well mean my death, but I don’t plan on going down without a fight.

This book contains side characters that are m/m, please don’t read if that’s not your thing.
Yohan Yukiya Sese Cuneta 사요한 📇: First story I've read where different parallel worlds were used a lot in addition to an existence of some economic system between worlds, and war. Has great beginning and middle, although the part where the fight is going on, it was rushed, the descriptions were more of a summary than a story. Other than that, it is a stand alone book from the other series "World Breaker Beginnings". I'll wait for the next installment in the "World Breaker" series. I want to see these worlds, the secret of these one particular world where everyone is a traveller, the explanation on why people have powers in some worlds, and a lot of other things. This is a universe with a lot of potential and I can't wait to see it grow.

Yohan Yukiya Sese Cuneta 사요한 📇: I don't know where to begin. I haven't encountered a time travel trilogy that only gets better in each release. The author did very awesome in tracking down every single "period" of the travels of each characters in their different versions. As well as interweaving the biggest arc of all in each novel arc and the side arcs and the minor arcs. I can not even imagine how time consuming it all was, unless of course he himself is a time traveler. Then again, he already showed us how he tracked of time for each character, if you think about it. Great characters. The actions are intense, you want to just skip to know the ending but you know you can't. The growth of the characters, especially, Ben and Mym were simply perfect. The comical dialogues. The adventures in time. The use of various historical records and future imagination combined, made this trilogy one any time travel fanatic should never miss. I'm sure this series is a legend in the time travelling community. Then again, the author might actually be a time traveller, could very well be their story, of Ben and Mym. Or maybe, I'm a time traveler who wants to leave a mark here in December 2017 because I saw my review in the Temporal Academy in 2317. We can't have paradoxes, right? ;) Mabuhay! -2317.
The Last Remnant [Book] Goodreads
author: Pam Brondos Skyscape 2016 - 5
Following her forced departure from Fourline, Natalie Barns has been aching to rejoin the struggle to overthrow its evil dictator. With Soris and those she left behind constantly on her mind, Nat bides her time, determined to find a cure for the duozi—those infected by the terrifying Nala.

An unexpected discovery propels her back to those she has sworn to protect, but her reappearance in Fourline is anything but straightforward, particularly when familiar faces appear when least expected. Despite the warnings of her friends and the looming threat of the vengeful Nala queen, Nat joins the fight in Fourline, both in her mind as well as on the field of battle. Her decisions may salvage Fourline’s future but at the risk of her own horrifying fate.
Yohan Yukiya Sese Cuneta 사요한 📇: A world that will be missed. Real characters, growing relationships, it was like reading a true story that happened a few years ago. I hope the world of Fourline will still be explored as there are no doubt other places, kingdoms, countries. An origin story is also one that is a curious one, especially the membrane. Or, new adventures by her sister Cal. They will all be missed. It was an adventure that rings true for many of us. The discrimination, corruption, mistaken identities, judgment from people, the evil of war, being victims, passiveness, trying to survive, simply doing one's duty, you name it. Great job. Perfectly executed.
On the Meldon Plain [Book] Goodreads
author: Pam Brondos Skyscape 2016 - 1
Natalie Barns is falling apart. Since returning from Fourline, she’s tried desperately to focus on the world in front of her—the one of classes, money, and family. Seeking refuge from what plagues her, Natalie returns to the costume shop and discovers her wound is much more dangerous than she ever could have imagined. What she learns sets her on an inexorable path back to the kingdom of Fourline. If she’s to have a chance of survival, she must confront Soris’ fate and the fears that have been festering in her heart—or the Nala remnant will change her life forever.
Yohan Yukiya Sese Cuneta 사요한 📇: I definitely like Book 2. Now we're into action. I don't why this series is being compared to Narnia because it is far from it. This series is a great adventure to a parallel world where we are presented with real people with real challenges in their lives. Characters who are growing every step of the way. Relationships being tested and made stronger. No cheesy lines, yet not too serious. No stupid decisions from the characters because stupidity is not common in real life in scenarios like what they faced. Level headed, that's what they are. And I can't wait to read the next book. Well done. It stands out Now, enough rambling. On to book 3!

Time's Divide [Book] Goodreads
author: Rysa Walker Skyscape 2015 - 10
The Cyrists are swiftly moving into position to begin the Culling, and Kate’s options are dwindling. With each jump to the past or the future, Kate may trigger a new timeline shift. Worse, the loyalties of those around her—including the allegiances of Kiernan and the Fifth Column, the shadowy group working with Kate—are increasingly unclear.

Kate will risk everything, including her life, to prevent the future her grandfather and the Cyrists have planned. But, when time runs out, it may take an even bigger sacrifice to protect the people she loves.
Yohan Yukiya Sese Cuneta 사요한 📇: That was one unforgettable and epic adventure. You had to flip very fast but there are surprising twists and turns when you think it's almost the end. Excellent use of time travel as indeed, spacetime is relative. In this case, relative is even more important and useful. In the end, it's both sad and happy. We have to be positive but should not forget to be realist. Learn to take risks without sacrificing our family and love ones. All of these and more were beautifully woven in this finale novel where fans are challenged to be in the shoes of Kate, Kier, and Kate.
Time's Edge [Book] Goodreads
author: Rysa Walker Skyscape 2014 - 10
To stop her sadistic grandfather, Saul, and his band of time travelers from rewriting history, Kate must race to retrieve the CHRONOS keys before they fall into the Cyrists' hands. If she jumps back in time and pulls the wrong key--one that might tip off the Cyrists to her strategy--her whole plan could come crashing down, jeopardizing the future of millions of innocent people. Kate's only ally is Kiernan, who also carries the time-traveling gene. But their growing bond threatens everything Kate is trying to rebuild with Trey, her boyfriend who can't remember the relationship she can't forget.

As evidence of Saul's twisted mind builds, Kate's missions become more complex, blurring the line between good and evil. Which of the people Saul plans to sacrifice in the past can she and Kiernan save without risking their ultimate goal--or their own lives?
Yohan Yukiya Sese Cuneta 사요한 📇: A bit slow but it is a good way to further build up the characters and the world. There were one or two confusing chronological travels but negligible. Overall, a good sequel, more mystery, drama, and uncertainty, than the first book.
