Hibari Misora is the standout central magnetic (and genderfluid) performance in this otherwise-formulaic untranslated bakumatsu-set jidaigeki. In one memorable scene she effortlessly segues from singing a song I’ll call “Men Are Trash, But…” alone by the river to kicking 50 dude’s asses. She made something like 14 other films in the same year so it’s possible to see why this one might’ve fallen between the cracks, but it isn’t lost and doesn’t deserve to be forgotten.
