Soul (2020)On New Year's Eve, my wife and I decided to subscribe to Disney+ to be able to watch Soul. Soul is another fine piece of audiovisual storytelling from the Pixar maestros. The plot took an unexpected turn, but that made the film more original. If you haven't seen Soul yet, I'd advise to stop reading now and go watch it first. . . . I loved the experimental style of the other dimension. The characters were a nice tribute to the classic La Linea cartoons. But my favorite part was the scene where Joe, the lead character, realizes what life is really about: the little, simple things that made you happy before society made you forget those. I also loved the electronic tunes of the other dimension, only to realize when reading the credits that my old hero Trent Reznor is responsible for those. There are also a few things that kept me from calling this a masterpiece... First of all, the overall message was a bit ambivalent: on one hand you should make an effort to find your spark in life, on the other hand the main character was disappointed right after he had realized his dream. I also expected more exploration of Soul music in a film with that title. Most of the film was divided between the alternate dimension and slapstick-style action on Earth. And finally, I found the ending a bit abrupt and unsatisfying.
