a review of 天使之卵

Angel's Egg (1985)Tenshi no Tamago is one of those obscure, timeless gems you only come across every once in a long while. The 1985 anime is an intriguing, dark, surreal fairy-tale, set in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world, which has features of both baroque architecture as well as science fiction. The beautiful rough ink style perfectly establishes an ominous, dream-like, melancholic atmosphere, while the main characters and some of the story elements have an obviously biblical undertone. I adored the screen compositions that are rich in contrasting shadows, and I loved the surrealism and impressive resourcefulness, pleasantly reminding me of the imaginative 1970s comic series Philémon by the French author and artist Frédéric 'Fred' Aristidès, combined with some Jean 'Moebius' Giraud style sci-fi elements. Don't expect a conventional story, expect watching a fascinating, feverish dream, David Lynch style.
