The Neon Demon has lifted Nicolas Winding Refn to a higher spot in my coolbook, after much enjoying Drive and Valhalla Rising. The Neon Demon is a mesmerizing, feverish, surreal, sinister fairy-tale that effectively satirizes the superficial world of fashion and glamour. Refn deconstructs beauty in a cinematographic work of art, larded with allegories and some pitch-black humor, oozing sensuality and detachment at the same time, wrapped in a delicious Retrowave / Outrun aesthetic, and accompanied by fittingly dark electronic music.
