a review of 肉与灵

On Body and Soul is an unusual love story with a pleasantly surreal atmosphere and a slow pace that perfectly fits the poetic cinematography. The plot is quite original, and the main characters are intriguing. The dry, matter-of-factly film style and balanced screen compositions reminded me a lot of Aki Kaurismäki's work, as did the black humor, while the estranging atmosphere of isolation felt similar to Denis Villeneuve's Enemy (2013). Also, the mesmerizing deer scenes gave me goosebumps. On Body and Soul is one of those little gems that keeps lingering in your mind for a while after you've seen it.
