Fascinating, but also gimmicky

Backrooms left me with mixed feelings. Initially, the film is laudably original and intriguing. It was nice to recognize influences from Poltergeist, The Shining and Twin Peaks. But as the plot unfolds, the surrealism gradually starts to feel gimmicky, while the narrative gets less coherent and feels lost along the way, with an unsatisfactory ending.
