Annihilation (2018)

I think Annihilation has some intriguing facets, such as the refraction of DNA causing creative mutations. But there were also a number of unconvincing elements, such as the plot: five women who barely know each other and are relatively inexperienced in combat go on an armed, suicidal mission into dangerous alien territory, and immediately risk their lives for each other (crocodile scene). And why isn't at least one of them constantly filming all the marvelous things they encounter? The CGI was of varying quality. For example, the motion of the mutant deer with flower antlers was unconvincing, and ruined an otherwise magical scene. The atmospheric refraction effects and lens effects were a nice touch, but as the film progressed the brightly glowing light in nearly every scene started to become an annoying gimmick. The morphing, mimicking alien entity near the end reminded me of the classic alien encounter scene in James Cameron's The Abyss (1989). I also found the final scene a bit weak and predictable. You just knew that was going to happen. In conclusion, I think Annihilation is not a bad film, but it didn't impress me like I hoped it would.
