Maudie (2016)Maudie is the kind of film that has all the ingredients of a Hallmark-style tearjerker, but the direction and acting level elevates it to a sincere, sympathetic and emotional portrait of a sensitive person who had to cope with an inborn disability in a harsh, uncaring era. There are multiple similarities between Maudie and The Elephant Man (beautifully filmed by David Lynch). They both actually existed, they shared a sensitive character and creative talent, and they both had to endure mockery from stupid people, just because they were different. Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke delivered fine, moving performances. Near the end the film balanced on the border of becoming a bit too melodramatic, but it didn't cross the line.
