Cat's Eye (1985)

The last time I saw Cat's Eye was as a youngster in the late 1980s. I decided to rewatch it in 2017. The majority of my rating is earned by the first part, featuring a young James Woods trying to quit smoking with the help of a dubious rehab center. I've always had a soft spot for Woods' typical neurotic characters, and the delirious smokers party scene is hilarious. It made me laugh out loud. The second part is less humorous. The vertigo-inducing scenes are thrilling, but there's a certain naivety in the acting that was only possible in 1980s films. The third part, with the naughty little critter, feels like it's aimed at an audience of twelve year olds, and turns the overall impression of Cat's Eye into a second-rate TV movie. All in all, Cat's Eye is amusing enough to watch on a lost Friday evening with a couple of beers within reach.
