The Devil's Candy (2016)

The Devil's Candy is an intriguing mix of traditional horror and a David Lynch style dark, surreal atmosphere. I liked a number of touches, such as the estranging cinematographic compositions and the use of rapid cuts to alternate between a bloody murder and the creation of a painting. On a negative note, the concept of a possessed killer playing metal music on an electric guitar sounds cool, but it diminished the horror experience for me by adding a dubiously whimsical element to an otherwise pretty sinister film, making it suffer from a genre identity crisis. Furthermore, the child-like chubbiness and mental state of the killer also made the film less horrific than it could have been. In conclusion, The Devil's Candy is a visually well-crafted horror film that could have been more.
