The Tenant (1976)

The Tenant is a relatively obscure Polanski film, starring himself in the lead role. It made me realize once again what a genius he is. The Tenant is a gloomy portrayal of gradually growing insanity, featuring some brilliantly original, goosebumps-inducing surreal scenes, and a motley crew of uncanny, Fellini-esque characters. The Tenant could be called a tribute to Polanski's earlier masterpiece Repulsion. It features a similar sense of increasing paranoia, with the main character feeling trapped inside an apartment. In conclusion — before David Lynch there was Roman Polanski to make you feel pleasantly uncomfortable.
