The Monster Squad (1987)

If you would feed The Goonies, Fright Night, The Lost Boys and related 1980s classics to an AI algorithm, it would shit out The Monster Squad. This movie has all nostalgic 1980s film ingredients: a bunch of kids going on an adventure, a dog following them, cheesy jokes, an evil German guy, bullies, Stan Winston monsters, old school non-diet Pepsi cans, lipgloss, a tree house, a phone booth, third-rate pop music, the works. The pleasant 1980s lightheartedness forms the vast majority of The Monster Squad's appeal, as it lacks the quality of the aforementioned horror parody classics such as Fright Night and The Lost Boys. That's why I rated it three out of five stars, but I definitely enjoyed time-travelling back to my childhood years.
