Stonehearst Asylum (2014)I quite liked Stonehearst Asylum — a.k.a. Eliza Graves — based on a Poe story, and directed by the man who created the brilliant nightmare of The Machinist. The art direction is very well done, capturing the essence of Victorian gothic design, establishing a great fin de siècle atmosphere. Kate Beckinsale is radiant, and acting veterans Ben Kingsley and Michael Caine are always a treat to experience. Stonehearst Asylum has a theatrical disposition, with almost Fellini-like outcast characters. I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, it's got plenty of cliches, is predictable and somewhat overdramatic, but that didn't really bother me. It fits the romantic Victorian style of the film.
