Sicario (2015)

A movie that reaches an average IMDb rating of 8 out of 50000 votes is at least worth checking out. Sicario takes you on a ride to the grim drug war side of Mexico, following a special operations team. Not surprisingly, the border between lawful and criminal is very blurry. As usual, Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin deliver convincing performances. Emily Blunt's character irritated me though, being annoyingly obstinate and a tenaciously law-abiding goody two-shoes throughout the movie. I liked Sicario's gloomy atmosphere, effectively complemented by tension-inducing music. But I think the movie has its flaws. For example, throughout the film there was a sense of development towards a drug lord army versus special ops grand finale that didn't take off. I also found the film lacking in character development here and there. For instance, we know virtually nothing about the big drug lord end boss when he finally briefly appears at the end, which makes him very one-dimensional. As a last note, the overly obvious tobacco company sponsoring of the film also annoyed me a little.
