Inside Out (2015)I read a lot of raving comments regarding Inside Out, so it had to live up to quite some hype for me. The pros: • Very original concept. • I liked the realistic rendering of the real-world scenes versus the old school Pixar rendering style of the brain worlds (a smart budget move as well, because the majority of the movie probably didn't require long rendering times). • Loved the abstract scenes. They reminded me of Dumbo's classic surreal scenes. The cons: • I'm not very charmed by the character designs of the emotions. I thought they lacked some appeal and detail, and found the imaginary friend character downright ugly. It's almost as if Disney's commerce and bureaucracy didn't allow enough time and budget for Pixar's usual top-notch character development. • Regarding the personalities of the characters, Joy balanced on the edge of being annoying to me. She could have been one of those irritating "Ten steps to leading a life of happiness" bloggers. :) But maybe I'm a grumpy old guy. • Some of the family scenes made my eyes roll a bit. They should have left the monkey imitations out. But again, maybe I've become a cynical old fart. In conclusion I enjoyed Inside Out, but I don't think it matches the level of The Incredibles or Up.
