St. Vincent (2014)

Bill, oh Bill, I want to hug you. You just managed to pull the first tears from my eyes in at least a few years of watching a lot of movies. Sentimental feelgood movies often don't work for me. They usually follow the path of safe, predictable, hackneyed cliches, and in a way Saint Vincent doesn't really deviate from that path, but it's the performances, the palpable chemistry between the actors that sets it apart, with Bill as the star of the show, but the kid was great too. Usually, smart-ass movie kids are irritating, but this kid was genuinely likeable. Yes, this feelgood movie was effective. It made me feel good. Thanks, Bill. If you're ever in the neighbourhood, feel free to drop by for a whisky or two, or three, or four.
