I’m a sucker for 1970s and 1980s films, having grown up in those decades. Back then, it almost felt like one out of five movies had a Vietnam war veteran theme. Rolling Thunder is surprisingly subdued for a Vietnam vet movie. The action is scarce, there’s an admirable emphasis on war trauma and the broken families resulting from war, and the female co-star is humorous, independent and cool, as opposed to the usual helpless, screaming girls in action movies from those years.
