I quite liked Les Maîtres du Temps. I watched the original version with French audio. I loved the retro style and atmosphere. The captivating 1970s / 1980s weirdness of an animated film like this could never be achieved today, no matter what advanced computer graphics would be deployed. The imaginative designs by Mœbius (Jean Giraud) and the story pleasantly reminded me of cult surreal sci-fi animations like Fantastic Planet (1973), and the great surreal 1970s Philémon comic series by the late French artist and writer Fred. I’m pretty sure Studio Ghibli has drawn some inspiration from this film for their similar 1984 sci-fi adventure animation Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. I can also recommend Angel’s Egg (1985) and Belladonna of Sadness (1973) when it comes to this type of cult, surreal, atmospheric, imaginative retro-animation.
