Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part One (2023)

Watched Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse yesterday, and I was really impressed by its radical execution and immersive storytelling. Then I watched Across the Spider-Verse today, and... I think this one was just too much. It felt like the first film on steroids, and the first film was already an epileptic experience. Aside from even more flashy editing, even more visual style mash-ups and even more multi-dimensional Spider-chaos, I felt less sympathy for the characters this time. Some characters even annoyed me in this part. I think this lesser impression is at least partly because after the success of the ground-breaking first part, the studio honchos undoubtedly smelled more big bucks, and the concept turned into a franchise, which - spoiler ahead - is all the more emphasized by the fact that the film's two and a half hours turned out to be one big bridge to a third part. The 'To be continued' ending was a real bummer. I still gave this three and a half stars out of five, because technically it's another marvel (pun intended), but after the initial impressiveness of the first part, the style-switching visual extravaganza gradually becomes a gimmick, making a solid story more important again, and this part did not grab me as much as the first one. It felt more like Spider-Man: Across the Rick-and-Morty-ADHD-verse. To be honest, I don't think I'm going to watch the third part when it is released.
