M3GAN (2022)

I saw a trailer of M3gan and thought: looks like a fun film to watch without high expectations. And whad'ya know... I loved it! M3gan feels like an unpretentious tribute to classics like Child's Play (1988), Westworld (1973) and Gremlins (1984), larded with a pleasant amount of dark humor. M3gan's cinematic style has an authentic 1980s feel to it. Everything is straightforward and uncomplicated: the reasonably predictable scenario, the scene compositions, the lighting, the dialogs, even the acting style. As an Eighties kid I like that. But that's not all. On a deeper level, M3gan offers a preview of what is surely going to arrive with the accelerating developments in the field of artificial intelligence. Mobile devices have already become a youngster's best friend. Imagine how things will be when children get really attached to an empathic robot with sophisticated conversational AI like ChatGPT. Parents or human friends won't be able to compete with a perfect, patient, understanding robotic friend.
