My Lucky Stars (1985)

"Sammo Hung Kicks Ass" on Criterion only seems to have a tiny handful of movies left in it either due to Canadian licensing issues or they just got taken off. I had wanted to give Hung another chance after the baffling politics of Eastern Condors but it turns out that My Lucky Stars is the second in a trilogy and they don't have the other two. ANYWAY This was great except for about 20 minutes in the middle where everybody is being a sex pest at Sibelle Hu. Leave her alone! And it turns out she kicks ass actually. I think it would have made a better gag if she put them all in their place in that section. I also loved her claustrophobic hallway fight at the end and thought that the way the film chose to end it was a little disappointing in a "we can't have too much girl power, it's 1985" kind of way. But some great choreography, sets, cinematography, and some of the gags did genuinely make me laugh. Fun to spot Richard Ng who I loved in Mr. Vampire III. It did kinda feel like Jackie Chan's scenes were shot at a totally different time than everything else, but both of his major sections were super good, and Sammo Hung did live up to the title of the collection in his yellow Charles Jourdan sweatsuit, one of the sponsors listed at the end of the film.
