Mysterious Island - Review
This could have been a bona fide good watch, but it got dull when the characters were given no motivation to do anything but react to events. The giant animals were fun to watch and didn't deserve to die at the hands of these one-dimensional humans who inspired no affection on our part (also apparently not true to the source material). The skull cave built by the art department was cool also, but the writing just dragged things down. In the last twenty minutes the big actor suddenly appears to provide the characters a way out of their sudden predicament, a submariner ex machina. It wasn't a good sign that I spent quite a bit of time looking things up at IMDB instead of being glued to my screen when it was clear the characters had no stakes in what happened.
