updated review post reading 8/4 -
hm... HMMM... i need to give this book a lot of props because i dug it for so so so so so so so many reasons that are so up my particular alley (translation, art, environmentalism, extremely specific and comprehensive lists of cultural and historical and geographical and ecological facts, autofiction, women who lie and hit each other and kill each other)... there was a Lot that frustrated me about this book ('something' darker = blood on snow made me mad for real lmao)... but i think its a whole over parts kind of situation here. billions of parts... one part which is tripping me out is 'the extinction of irena rey's connection to menippean satire which i discovered by strange happenstance tonight, a few hours after finishing 'extinction'... i was researching the short story 'there will come soft rains' because today is 'there will come soft rains' day... i opened the website 'www.libraryofshortstories.com' and came across a dostoevsky joint called 'the dream of a ridiculous man'... in 'the dream of a ridiculous man' there is a date mentioned, november 3rd, which is an extremely prominent date in 'the extinction of irena rey'... after reading the short story 'the dream of a ridiculous man' i had to do a little research because it was so moving and impactful... i came to find out 'the dream of a ridiculous man' is something called a menippean satire, along with 'finnegans wake', which is the book 'the extinction of irena rey' was originally pitched to me as an alternative to (as in, someone said to read 'extinction' instead of 'finnegans wake')... this review is really disjointed but i needed to outline that particular coincidence... i think i'm a menippean satire enjoyer... in fact, i think i'd recommend anyone looking to read this book first read the 'the dream of a ridiculous man' Then the 'menippean satire' wikipedia page, THEN 'the extinction of irena rey' for ultimate effect... ALSO for anyone who loves reading fanfiction by people with hyperspecific jobs, this one is for you because author croft does have the same hyperspecific job as the main character... some have argued the autofiction levels of this book have reached RPF levels, which i can't comment on but there's that as well......... 4 stars and i didn't even like it that much. 4 stars and almost dnf'd it about 80% of the way through.... does this make sense??????? this book is not necessarily something i like, but i also do like it and it's something i respect deeply. Does This Make Sense????
